Summary
Under the supervision of the Pathology supervisor, the histology technician performs technical functions in the Histology laboratory to provide high quality microscopic slides of tissue for the detection of disease.
Education
Two years of formal training or education beyond the high school level (e.g., Associates Degree).
Certification, Registration, and Licensure
Certification required to obtain: Histology Technician (American Society Clinical Pathologist) within one year of employment.
Experience
One year experience in a Histology lab and/or completion of a CAHEA (Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation) accredited Histology program.
Responsibilities
Performs Microtomy (sectioning of surgical and autopsy tissue specimens).
Embeds tissue specimens.
Performs Immunohistochemistry procedures on surgical and autopsy cases.
Performs routine H-E staining procedures.
Performs specialized selective techniques required for diagnostic purposes, to include, bone
decalcification, muscle, kidney and nerve biopsies, and frozen tissue sectioning techniques.
Performs special stain procedures for histology and cytology specimens as outlined by the Histology
Special Stains Procedure Manual.
Maintains Histologic equipment and Quality Assurance/Quality Control documentation.
Performs projects and other related duties.
Demonstrates compliance with corporate, departmental and job-specific requirements.
Participates in change and process improvements.
