Under management supervision, the Charge Analyst will evaluate clinical data to determine the appropriate level of charges for each patient in the nursing department; i.e. Observation, Obstetrics, ER, etc. and enters charges into the appropriate computer systems. This individual will work closely with the HIM Coders and Revenue Integrity to determine the appropriate level of reimbursement allowed for the type of care that was given. This position will be responsible for notifying Revenue Integrity and/or Management of issues that affect ability to charge for services based on analysis of documentation. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 2 years related healthcare experience is required.
A college degree is preferred.
Medical terminology course completion preferred.
CPC certification or eligibility, within 18 months of hire
• Ability to comprehend documentation of clinical procedures, treatments, and medications.
• Must be able to work independently, make justifiable decisions, and follow directions from various individuals.
• Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing with management, physicians, nurses, and colleagues.
• Experience in emergency services, finance, reimbursement, and/or insurance is preferred.
• Analytic, detail and process orientated skills are required
• Computer skills, inclusive of data entry and familiarity with Microsoft Office type products, are required
Work which produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods of time, the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT between 40 and 70 percent of the time.
The job produces some physical demands. Typical of jobs that include regular walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, and some lifting of light weight objects.
• 75% - Analyzes clinical data in the patients’ electronic medical records to identify and determine the level of care given, and related billable charges.
o Assigns charges, and enters them into appropriate computer programs (i.e. EPIC).
o Maintains regular communication with Revenue Integrity and HIM Coders to ensure the appropriate level of charges. Maintains current knowledge of charging practices.
o Maintains productivity goals for timely entry (i.e. 80-100 charts/day, 500+ records per month)
• 25% - Audits patient electronic records for completeness of documentation to charge appropriately. Analyzes the electronic patient record to determine acuity indicators for all patients seen in the designated nursing area(s).
o Provides regular feedback to Management.
