Navigating the job market can feel like a daunting task. With so many factors to consider, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. To shed light on jobseekers' priority when looking for a job, we conducted a poll within the Rise Community, our vibrant network of supportive peers, mentors, and companies. Here's what we found:

What Should Be Your Priority When Looking For a Job Results

Remote Work Flexibility: The New Top Priority (34%)

It's no surprise that the ability to work from anywhere has emerged as the top priority for job seekers. In a post-pandemic world, remote work has transitioned from a nice-to-have to a must-have for many. Flexibility in location allows for a better work-life balance, reduced commuting stress, and the freedom to choose a living environment that best suits one's lifestyle.

💡Job Market Insight

  • A 2023 McKinsey study found that 58% of employed respondents have the option to work from home at least one day a week, and 35% can do so full-time. The study underscores a significant shift in workplace preferences, with 87% of workers taking the opportunity to work flexibly when offered

  • According to another McKinsey analysis, the finance, management, professional services, and information sectors have the highest potential for remote work, further highlighting the growing demand for flexible working arrangements

Salary and Benefits: Compensation is King (21%)

While flexibility is crucial, compensation remains a significant factor. Our poll revealed that 21% of respondents prioritize salary and benefits above all else. A competitive package not only ensures financial stability but also reflects a company's recognition of an employee's value.

💡Job Market Insight

  • A recent survey by Glassdoor found that 67% of job seekers consider salary to be a crucial factor when applying for a job.

  • Benefits are also critical; SHRM reports that 60% of employees consider benefits to be a major factor in job satisfaction.

Work-Life Balance: Valuing Time on and off the Clock (15%)

Equally important to many is maintaining a healthy work-life balance. This means having the time and energy to pursue personal interests, spend time with loved ones, and recharge. Employers who respect and support this balance often see higher productivity and job satisfaction among their employees.

💡Job Market Insight

  • A Harvard Business Review study found that companies offering better work-life balance experience a 25% lower turnover rate.

  • The 2022 Deloitte Global Human Capital Trends report indicated that 72% of employees prioritize work-life balance when choosing a job.

Company Culture and Values: Finding Alignment (15%)

For 15% of our community, being part of an organization whose mission and values resonate with them is key. Working in a positive environment with a strong, supportive culture can significantly impact one's job satisfaction and overall happiness.

💡Job Market Insight

  • According to a 2023 LinkedIn survey, 70% of professionals said they would not work at a leading company if it had a bad workplace culture.

  • A Glassdoor report found that 77% of employees consider a company’s culture before applying for a job, and 56% say that a good workplace culture is more important than salary.

Career Growth Opportunities: The Long Game (13%)

Finally, career growth opportunities are a priority for 13% of respondents. Job seekers are looking for roles that offer a clear path for advancement, professional development, and the chance to acquire new skills. A job is not just about the present; it's about where it can take you in the future.

💡Job Market Insight

  • A LinkedIn Learning survey in 2024 found that 94% of employees would stay at a company longer if it invested in their career development.

  • The 2022 Workplace Learning Report from LinkedIn indicated that 74% of employees believe their lack of professional development opportunities limits their ability to succeed in their roles.
