Staff Accountant

About Adaptive

Adaptive is a cybersecurity startup on a mission to stop AI-powered cyberattacks, founded by Brian Long and Andrew Jones—proven entrepreneurs behind Attentive (Forbes Cloud 100, $10B+ valuation) and TapCommerce (acquired by Twitter). In 2025, Adaptive raised $55M, led by a16z and the OpenAI Fund, marking OpenAI's first-ever cybersecurity investment.

As generative AI drives new cyber threats, Adaptive is building the defense layer every organization needs. Our platform combines personalized security training, AI-driven attack simulations, and automated threat triage, all powered by the Adaptive Risk Intelligence Engine to quantify human risk at the individual level. Trusted by top banks, tech companies, and healthcare organizations, we protect teams from emerging threats like deepfakes, smishing, and voice scams. With a solid product foundation and a $200B+ market to transform, we're just getting started.

The Role

We’re hiring a full-time Staff Accountant based in our Los Angeles office to support day-to-day accounting operations and month-end close. This is a hands-on role in a lean, fast-moving accounting team where you’ll own core workflows end-to-end. On a daily basis, you will lead our accounts receivable and accounts payable operations. During close, you’ll support general ledger reconciliations and help keep our financials accurate, audit-ready, and on schedule. You’ll also contribute to ad-hoc audit and tax projects as we scale.

This role reports directly to the Head of Accounting & Finance.

What You’ll Do

  • Accounts Receivable (AR)

    • Own accounts receivable operations end-to-end, including:

      • Responding to customer questions regarding contracts, invoicing, and payments

      • Issuing and sending invoices on time and with accurate support

      • Recording and applying customer payments from our operating accounts

      • Following up on past-due invoices, resolving discrepancies, and keeping AR aging current

  • Accounts Payable (AP)

    • Own accounts payable operations end-to-end, including:

      • Reviewing and ensuring Ramp credit card transactions are coded correctly

      • Following up with employees to maintain receipt and policy compliance

      • Supporting vendor onboarding and documentation, including W-9 collection for 1099 filings

      • Keeping AP aging accurate and up to date

  • Month-End & Year-End Close

    • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close with accuracy and urgency.

    • Prepare and post routine journal entries (accruals, prepaid amortization, reclasses).

    • Perform balance sheet reconciliations, including:

      • Bank and credit card reconciliations

      • Prepaids and fixed assets

      • Commissions calculations and payouts

      • Sales tax payable

    • Review and clean up AR/AP aging, investigate variances, and drive issues to resolution.

    • Maintain close documentation and supporting schedules for audit readiness.

  • Audit & Tax Support

    • Assist with external audits and tax compliance by preparing schedules and responding to requests.

    • Support recurring compliance filings (e.g., 1099s, 3921s) and related documentation.

  • Projects & Process Improvement

    • Identify opportunities to streamline AR/AP and close processes as we scale.

    • Participate in accounting system improvements and future implementations.

    • Collaborate cross-functionally (Sales, CS, HR, Ops) to ensure clean inputs and accurate reporting.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • 1–3+ years of relevant accounting experience (startup, SaaS, or public accounting a plus).

  • Working knowledge of GAAP and core accounting principles.

  • Hands-on experience supporting month-end close and balance sheet reconciliations.

  • Experience owning or meaningfully supporting AR and/or AP processes.

  • Strong Excel/Google Sheets skills (pivot tables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, formulas).

  • Familiarity with an ERP/GL system (e.g., NetSuite, QuickBooks, Oracle, SAP) and modern finance tools (e.g., Ramp, Stripe, or similar).

Skills & Traits

  • High attention to detail and a strong sense of ownership.

  • Organized, deadline-driven, and comfortable juggling multiple priorities.

  • Clear communicator who’s confident working with customers and internal teams to resolve issues.

  • Improvement-minded—always looking for a better, cleaner way to run the process.
