The Communications team plays a key role in advancing the American Cancer Society’s mission to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. The Writer, Communications is part of a team responsible for managing the organization’s digital employee experience platforms—including the intranet, mobile app, and extranet—which are essential for informing, equipping, and empowering team members and volunteer leaders. This role also supports the External Communications team with writing assignments related to medical/scientific content, blog posts, press releases, and executive communications.

This individual contributes to an omni-channel internal communications strategy, working closely with communications leadership and other team members to deliver timely, engaging, and mission-aligned content. Success in this role is defined by the ability to write compelling, accurate, and audience-specific content across multiple platforms in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

***This is a remote position that can be home-based anywhere within the United States. Ability to work in a quick turnaround, fast-moving environment will be helpful,***

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Writes and edits high-impact internal and external content (35%)

Develops original content for internal news articles, intranet and extranet platforms, newsletters, talking points, presentations, blog posts, press releases, and technical med/sci materials—often under tight deadlines.

Supports omni-channel internal communications strategy (15%)

Collaborates with internal communications leadership to execute enterprise-wide strategies that inform and engage team members and volunteer leaders across multiple platforms.

Customizes content for multiple channels and audiences (15%)

Tailors messaging for various delivery platforms and internal audiences, ensuring clarity, consistency, and alignment with ACS’s broader communications goals.

Collaborates with internal and external partners (15%)

Works closely with business partners and Communications colleagues to develop and finalize content that supports both internal and external messaging priorities.

Contributes to live event communications (10%)

Assists in the planning and execution of internal events such as town halls, including writing scripts, talking points, and supporting materials.

Drives employee engagement through storytelling (5%)

Identifies and develops creative approaches to increase employee connection to ACS’s mission and values through internal news and storytelling.

Serves as a core member of the Internal Communications team (5%)

Participates in team planning, content reviews, and cross-functional initiatives that support the goals of the Communications department.

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Degree Required: Bachelor's Degree

  • Preferred Degree: Bachelor's Degree

  • Years of experience:  5-7 years

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:

Education and Experience:

  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in media relations, communications, or public relations.
  • Experience in healthcare, science, medical, or nonprofit communications is preferred.
  • Prior experience with journalism, a national health nonprofit, corporation, or PR agency is a plus.

Communication Excellence:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including editing and proofing.
  • Ability to explain complex topics clearly and concisely for a variety of audiences.

Strategic Thinking and Judgment:

  • Demonstrates strong news judgment and the ability to think strategically and creatively.
  • Capable of offering sound counsel and making informed decisions on sensitive or high-profile issues.

Project and Workflow Management:

  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with project management tools such as Monday.com and familiarity with intranet platforms is helpful.

Collaboration and Influence:

  • Skilled at building relationships and influencing across a distributed, matrixed organization.
  • Comfortable working with volunteers, staff, and cross-functional teams in a consultative and positive manner.

Adaptability and Initiative:

  • Quick to learn new topics and organizational structures. A self-starter with strong initiative, follow-through, and a consistent ability to deliver high-quality work on deadline.

Leadership Without Direct Authority:

  • Able to coordinate and guide the work of others, including writers and specialists, to ensure alignment and execution of strategic communications goals.

  • Brings a great attitude, a strong willingness to learn and be challenged, and a deep commitment to the mission and goals of the American Cancer Society.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

Minimal travel is currently required for this role.

Occasional travel may be necessary for on-site event support or content capture and to support enterprise-wide communications initiatives.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work is typically performed in a home office environment.

Must be available to respond to urgent communication needs outside of standard business hours, including evenings and weekends, as necessary.

The starting rate is $71,000 to $91,000 annual. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.
