Job Description

Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a Research Scientist to join the Analytical Development, Cell and Gene Therapy group. This position is expected to support the Analytical Development team through the development and validation of release and characterization assays for cell therapies, execution of complex data analyses, and support of routine analytical testing, investigations, and internal/external collaborations. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong skills in independent experimental design, execution, and troubleshooting, and effective cross-functional collaboration.

The ideal candidate will have expertise working with flow cytometry, method development and working with cells.

Key Duties and Responsibilities          

• Develop methods for release and characterization of cell therapy products, especially flow cytometry-based assays
• Design and execute experiments using cellular and molecular assays to support cell therapy development
• Lead analytical method validations for cell therapy products and author the corresponding analytical methods and validation protocols/reports
• Support analytical testing and investigations for process development and process characterization, with minimal supervision and rapid turnaround time
• Collaborate with external vendors to enable method development and successful technology transfer
• Provide expertise in experimental design, data analysis, assay troubleshooting, technical report writing, and presentations.
• Maintain proper documentation of experimental results and data interpretations.
• Ensure data quality and maintain data integrity of analytical results to support decision making.
• Independently prepare study presentations and presents experimental conclusions at internal team meetings.

Required Knowledge and Skills

• Strong hands-on experience with flow cytometry and corresponding data analyses is required; experience with cell culture and aseptic technique preferred
• Prior experience in analytical development
• Ability to follow safety regulations and work in a GMP-like laboratory environment.
• Demonstrated capabilities to independently digest and formulate experimental conclusions
• Ability to use information gained from experiments to inform method and program decisions.
• Skilled in efficient study and experimental design and demonstrated expertise in writing analytical methods, protocols, and reports.
• Ability to multi-task as necessary, managing competing priorities, and advancing multiple projects within required timelines.
• Excellent communicator (oral, written) with proven ability to build open and collaborative relationships and work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary and matrixed team.

Required Educational Level

• PhD. (or equivalent degree) and +1 years of relevant post-doctoral employment experience, or
• Masters Degree (or equivalent degree) and 5-7 years of relevant employment experience

Working Environment:

• This is an onsite position at our Boston LC1 site.
• Able to work upright and stationary and/or standing for typical working hours.  
• Able to use and learn standard office equipment and technology with proficiency.  
• Able to perform successfully under pressure while prioritizing and handling multiple projects or activities. 

Pay Range

$60-$65/hr
