General Notes

This position is located at the J.J. Pickle Research Campus in North Austin.

Purpose

Responsible for creating and updating design materials of a scientific nature for print and digital platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for creating and updating design materials for both print and digital platforms. Areas of work may include reports, books, brochures, illustrations, maps, presentations, posters, signage, environmental graphics, and web design.
  • The graphic designer collaborates with their immediate supervisor to determine the most effective methods for preparing materials to meet production deadlines. They may also consult directly with researchers to assess project needs, provide creative solutions, and make necessary adjustments.
  • Plotting maps and posters, printing and binding books, and laminating materials.
  • Maintaining an inventory of relevant materials, supplies, and equipment, and operating all equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in design or a design-related field.

• Minimum 1 year of graphic design and production experience.

• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat) and other relevant applications for producing high-quality digital content.

• Strong technical illustration skills.

• Working knowledge of graphic design principles (typography, color theory, composition, etc.).

• Strong sense of concept development and awareness of design trends.

• Excellent communication skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail.

• A client-driven mindset is essential, with a strong emphasis on responsiveness, professionalism, and delivering high-quality results that meet or exceed expectations.

• Proven ability to balance multiple projects concurrently in a deadline-driven environment.

• Must be able to work collaboratively and independently.

• Ability to interact in a professional manner with faculty, staff, and students.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of professional experience on a marketing, communications, or design/production team.

• Strong technical illustration skills of a scientific nature.

• Demonstrated expertise in publication layout.

• Working knowledge of AI-powered tools that can expedite and automate aspects of the design and editing process. Familiarity with platforms such as Adobe Firefly, Canva’s AI features, DALL·E, Runway ML, or similar tools.

• Photography a plus.

Salary Range

$55,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

  • May work around standard office conditions

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation

  • Occasional weekend, overtime, and evening work to meet deadlines

Employment Eligibility:
