I. General Summary
Under limited supervision serves the spiritual, existential, religious, and emotional needs of patients, families and employees according to the Common Qualifications and Competencies of Professional Chaplains. Provides proactive pastoral care and leadership to the larger Medical Center, while also attending to a designated specialty. Provides leadership for programs and process improvement. Serves as pastoral and religious resource to the professional schools associated with the Medical System on the Baltimore Campus of the University of Maryland.
II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
1. Assesses spiritual and religious needs and proactively provides pastoral care to patients, families and employees of the Medical Center and University staff in accordance with hospital policies, department procedures and accepted pastoral practices.
2. Serves as Duty Chaplain in accordance with procedures of Pastoral Care Services for respective Downtown and Midtown campuses, incorporating the spiritual and emotional dimensions of human development in order to work effectively across age ranges and service lines. Demonstrates effective triage and crisis management.
3. Provides, integrates and improves pastoral care to patients, families and staff on assigned specialty and in clinical care.
4. Adept in sudden death notification with highly emotional and complex medical, social, racial and religious dynamics.
5. Provides pastoral care to patients, families and staff of his/her faith tradition in accordance with policies and procedures of Pastoral Care Services and as authorized by his/her faith tradition. Coordinates and facilitates provision and administration of religion-specific sacraments, rituals and resources to all religious traditions, according to Pastoral Care Services policies and procedures, thereby increasing market favorability. Adapts and/or develops effective religious/spiritual resources appropriate to patient, family and staff need.
III. Education and Experience
1. Masters of Divinity or related theological degree with a minimum of 72 semester hours (such as M Div., MHL, MA), from an Association of Theological Schools (ATS) accredited college, university or seminary is required.
2. Minimum of four units (Level I & II) of ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education is required. Two units must be completed with documented Level II outcomes, unless units were taken prior to development of such outcomes.
3. Board Certified Chaplain with Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) or its cognate groups is required.
4. Completion of 50 continuing education hours per calendar year is required to maintain BCC of which 5 hours must be in research and 5 hours must be in diversity, inclusion and cultural humility.
Self-report the 5 hours in diversity, inclusion and cultural humility in the employee’s significant accomplishments, or attach the APC continuing education report, to the performance evaluation.
5. Ordination, rostering or licensing as a religious leader in his/her faith tradition or equivalent designation is preferred.
6. Letter of good standing from his/her faith tradition, or equivalent organization, is required.
7. 2 years professional chaplaincy experience in healthcare is required.
8. Adherence to APC code of ethics is required. Signed copy required upon hire and updated each year as part of Annual Evaluation or renewal of certification.
IV. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Working knowledge of psychological and sociological disciplines and religious beliefs and practices in the provision of pastoral care.
2. Working knowledge of biomedical ethical decision-making.
3. Working knowledge of group dynamics and organizational behavior.
4. Demonstrated ability to communicate in a manner sensitive to patient’s culture, religion, spirituality, gender, race, ethnicity, age, social or socioeconomic status, gender expression, sexual orientation, physical or intellectual ability, and medical condition/disease process and in the patient’s preferred language and/or with the use of a hospital approved interpreter/assistive device.
5. Ability to provide and receive constructive feedback to enhance the provision of pastoral care to patients, families and staff. Ability to acknowledge, address and resolve conflict with respect and pastoral sensitivity.
6. Ability to maintain self and situational awareness.
7. Ability to maintain non-anxious presence.
8. Ability to collaborate and participate as both a team member and as a sole provider. Ability to demonstrate independent initiative and leadership within the scope of practice, while respecting roles and boundaries, and seeking guidance.
9. Ability to respect the confidentiality of information from all sources, including patients, families and staff, legal or organizational records, and other care providers (law enforcement & EMS; community religious leaders) in accordance with federal and state laws, regulations and rules, and HIPPA.
10. Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to work with various departments, employees, patients and families.
11. Demonstrated ability to learn and utilize changing technology to enhance the delivery of care and advance the work of professional chaplaincy (i.e. TigerConnect, Webex, Zoom, Facebook, EPIC, WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT, email, google calendar, and other emerging programs).
12. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient populations(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and
development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or his population-specific and age-specific needs.
13. Ability to understand and function within the institutional culture and systems, including business principles and practices.
14. Ability to work with patients possessing potentially infectious diseases using the appropriate universal precautions and safety procedures.
