Who we’re looking for
Toyota’s Powertrain Design team is seeking a passionate, highly skilled and experienced Senior Engineering Manager to lead our Evaluation team. This role involves leading a team responsible for the comprehensive evaluation and testing of powertrain systems, ensuring performance and compliance with Toyota standards.
The ideal candidate will have a:
Strong background in mechanical engineering.
Deep understanding of evaluating powertrain systems, including internal combustion engines, electric motors, drivetrain, battery and hybrid technologies.
Proficiency in instrumentation, data analysis and software related to powertrain testing.
Proven track record of successfully delivering projects.
Reporting to the General Manager Evaluation [MBD & Physical], the person in this role will support the Powertrain Design (PTD) department's objective to build “World Class Powertrains in North America”.
What you’ll be doing
This role requires a blend of technical expertise, leadership skills, and strategic thinking to successfully lead the powertrain evaluation team:
Leadership & Team Management:
Recruit, train, and mentor a team of evaluation engineers, conduct performance evaluations, coaching sessions and foster professional career growth.
Review and approve technical documents: technical reports, periodic status reports, test plans, test methodology proposals, data analyses.
Powertrain Evaluation:
Maintain and develop comprehensive powertrain testing protocols ensuring alignment with industry best practices.
Conduct benchmarking studies against competitors, suppliers and industry standards, collaborating with powertrain design and TMC to integrate findings.
Project Management:
Lead the evaluation engineers and technicians to execute projects, managing schedules and budgets to ensure milestone achievement and consistent 100% utilization of people and resources.
Negotiate project budgets, resources, schedules and scopes to achieve organizational Mission, Vision, Targets.
Regulatory Compliance:
Ensure powertrain evaluations comply with Toyota safety, compliance and regulatory requirements.
Collaborate with compliance teams for audits and inspections.
Stakeholder Communication:
Develop relationships with stakeholders, vision, methods and tools to achieve high testing output, data analysis and technical reports with judgments/recommendation.
Reporting key team metrics, project status, challenges, and potential solutions to senior management and other stakeholders.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working collaboratively with diverse teams.
Develop Business Plans and Strategies:
Responsible for multi-year group plans - Annual Group Action Plan and Group Vision.
Assist the General Manager to develop vision, roadmap, and organizational changes.
Annual planning/negotiation for budgets with requesting organizations.
What you bring
Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in an Engineering discipline (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Aeronautical, Aerospace, Electro-Mechanical) or related field.
8+ years in powertrain evaluation.
Proven experience in a managerial role.
Strong technical and program knowledge of powertrain technologies, covering internal combustion engines, electric motors, drivetrain, battery and hybrid technologies.
Proficiency in instrumentation, data analysis and software related to powertrain testing.
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze complex engineering challenges.
Strong leadership and team management skills, with a proven track record of successful project delivery.
Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally to up 15%.
Added bonus if you have
Master’s degree in mechanical/automotive engineering.
Hands-on experience with powertrain testing and evaluation.
Detailed design, CAE/MBD and development knowledge of powertrain systems.
Detailed knowledge of powertrain instrumentation and data analysis tools/systems.
Experience working in a multi-cultural environment.
Successfully passed a Toyota TBP panel.
