Overview

The Competitive Gymnastics Head Coach is an elite-level professional coach who is solely responsible for overseeing the Branch's overall competitive team gymnastics program, ensuring focus on competitive excellence, athlete development, long-term commitment, and team culture. Its primary duties include leading, developong, implementing, and evaluating the effectiveness of competitive gymnastics training plans, fostering long-term athlete and team commitment, supervising and mentoring head and team coaches, and managing the safety and administrative aspects of the program.

Schedule

  • Location: Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA
  • Schedule:
    • Monday - Friday: 1 pm - 8:30 pm
    • Sunday: 9 am - 2 pm

Travel with the team is required, season is typically December - May each year. 

Will do admin work in an office and coach multiple ages and levels on the floor, 4-5 hours/day

Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of competitive team gymnastics strategy for the assigned branch, including organization, preparation and implementation of progressive team lesson plans ensuring focus on skills advancement and mastery, choreography, team dynamics, team competition readiness, commitment, and safety at trainings and competitions.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive guideline on competitive team gymnastics program to assist aspiring gymnasts, teams, and their families navigate and understand the details of each level, progression, and requirements.
  • Build a supportive and engaged team culture, foster long-term training commitment, prevent and resolve team conflicts, ensure a strong team foundation as the team progresses through the different competitive levels, and aligning training schedules with team members' life commitments and aspirations. 
  • Oversee the overall daily training sessions at the Gymnastics Center, providing constructive feedback and guidance to coaches and their teams as needed. Review and evaluate coaches' performance, develop coach mentoring and action plans to ensure that established gymanstics program strategies and safety plans are being followed.
  • Develop preparation plans in upcoming competitions (local meets, state, regional, and national) including ensuring team members' physical and mental readiness, having routines that meet competition requirements, conditioning and injury prevention, mock competitions, logistical planning, registration, travel plans and accommodation (if needed), uniforms and equipment, parent-guardian communication, emergency planning, and team coordination. 
  • Lead the head and team coaches in creating effective daily training routines, leveraging the strengths of individual gymnasts and their teams, managing the pressures in competitive events, and encouraging a positive training and competition experience for the teams.
  • Ensure the appropriate assessment of individual gymnasts and their teams for the right training level based on skill proficiency, physical readiness, mental preparedness, time commitment, and long-term goals.
  • Communicate with parents and gymnastics on program expectations, responsibilities, individual and team progress.
  • Develop gymnastics safety and maintenance protocols, ensure that they are being followed, and immediate necessary steps are being taken during critical incidents while in trainings or competitions.
  • Maintain correspondence with USAG on coaches' and athletes' memberships and registration. Organize and host USAG Gymnastics meets. Act as the meet director for all USAG meets and events.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience (see below)
  • At least 10 years gymnastics experience
    • 5 years of which as professional level competitive team coach (all USAG levels)
    • 2 years in a leadership or head coach position in gymnastics upper-level competitive setting
  • 18 years of age or older, licensing, state law and our government funders require that staff within YMCA of San Diego County be fingerprinted, prior to reporting to work, and include subsequent arrest notifications.
  • CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification, must include Adult and Child/Infant, obtained within 30 days of hire and must be from one of the following certifying organizations: 
    • American Red Cross
    • American Heart Association
    • American Safety & Health Institute

Competencies

  • Proven achivement of the highest standards in the gymnastics coaching profession, integrating years of hands-on career-level competitive coaching experience using advanced gymnastics techniques.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of gymnastics techniques, coupled with the ability to design and implement progressive training drills and provide precise spotting for safe and effective skill development across all levels.
  • Strong skills in leadership, organizational, program planning and execution, and team mechanics to effectively manage and guide a team of gymnasts and head coaches towards safety and success in competition.
  • Expertise in conducting throrough equipment inspections, identifying potential hazards, and implementing preventative measures to ensure a safe training environment.
  • Deep understanding of the competition structure including local meets, state, regional, and national championships.
  • Expert knowledge of all aspects of gymnastics - technical skills, choreography, proper use of equipment and safety.
  • Proven professional level experience in competitive team management and track record in coaching successful gymnasts or teams, participating as a judge in competitive gymnastics.
  • Understanding of child development and the ability to adapt coaching methods for different age groups and skill levels.
  • Excelptional communication and interpersonal skills to effectively relay clear instructions, provide feedback, and engage with competitive gymnasts, parents, and staff. 
  • Problem-solving skills to identify and address safety & performance issues, and conflicts among team members.
  • Patience and dedication to work with athletes over long periods to develop and improve their skills. 
  • Visual and auditory ability to monitor team safety and respond swiftly to critical incidents.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service, create and maintain a professional and positive environment for gymnasts, Y members, coworkers, and the public. 

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • The incumbent will have full staff supervisory responsibility including hiring, training, performance evaluation, discipline of direcct reports. Will supervise staff staff in these job titles: Head Gymnastics Coach, Team Gymnastics Coach.

Pay Range

USD $29.94 - USD $35.93 /Hr.
