Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic health-care system at UChicago Medicine as a Special Procedures Nurse, on our main Hyde Park campus.

 

Under the direction of an Attending Physician or a licensed independent practitioner, RN provides technically complex and high risk nursing care services to patients which may include one or more of the following categories: sedation, intravenous infusions, complex procedures, e.g., lumbar puncture, cardiac catherization; This may also include specialized monitoring during procedure and recovery phase; The RN may have Charge Nurse responsibility for his/her assigned unit.

  • Represents The University of Chicago Medical Center (UCMC) in a positive manner with the prospective, former and current community we serve; interacts effectively with a diverse groupof faculty, staff, and other customers of our services; demonstrates knowledge of the operating practices of UCMC

  • To accomplish our mission, we call upon the skills and expertise of all who work together to advance medical innovation, serve the health needs of the community, and further the knowledge of those dedicated to caring
  • Handles confidential information consistent with Federal HIPAA legislation
  • Performs a variety of clinical and research procedures with efficiency and high standards of quality; assures that the proper protocol is used for each sedation
  • Provides patient care in a compassionate and empathetic manner; demonstrates knowledge of age-specific considerations in the provision of care. Involves a multidisciplinary team as neededto support patient and family psychological, social and spiritual needs
  • Accurately completes required patient assessment, documentation, and interpretations for each patient encounter. Possesses sound professional judgment for timely physician intervention as needed
  • Recognizes patient conditions requiring immediate actions, initiates appropriate life supporting interventions while communicating appropriately with physicians
  • Maintains nursing equipment and work areas in proper working condition; reports malfunctioning equipment or housekeeping issues to the appropriate person
  • Maintains a neat and clean work area with equipment
  • Maintains adequate inventory control of all necessary supplies
  • Emergency equipment maintained with adequate availability, good working order and restocks as needed with a fiscal awareness and accountability
  • Interfaces with customers, specifically patients, families, visitors, and UCMC staff in a professional, positive and accommodating manner; demonstrates knowledge of AIDET principles and employs in all situations; demonstrates flexibility in accommodating special needs of customers whenever possible
  • Performs all required Quality Assurance testing as indicated or as required by UCMC Rotates to clinical areas as directed to assist in safe staffing ratios; utilizes resources to safely transport sedated patients to an appropriate or designated area within the UCMC

Required Qualifications

  • RN Required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred; experience may be considered in lieu of degree inaddition to 5+ years clinical experience
  • Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the State of Illinois
  • Current CPR, ACLS, and/or PALS Certifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Leadership/Management experience in area of specialty
  • Experience working in a research environment
  • 2 to 3 years of recent Critical Care/ Emergency room nursing experience (or 2 to 3 years oncology experience)
  • One additional certification in area specialty

Position Details

  • Job Type/FTE: 1.0, Full-time
  • Shift: Days 7a-530p
  • Call Requirements- 7 day per 6 weeks 
  • Unit/Department: Rad Intervention 
  • CBA Code: NNU
