Home Depot basically has two types of workers. There are the store employees who are on Home Depot’s payroll, and then there’s us “store support” folks who get paid by vendors but still work in the store full-time. The store employees are always talking about how stressed they are—their hours keep getting changed or cut, and they’re constantly short-staffed. Store support, especially those of us in merchandising, definitely have it a bit easier. But honestly, you don’t learn much unless you take the time to look things up or read the packaging yourself.

Giving one person the workload of three and expecting them not to burn out is ridiculous. Hire more people instead of dumping endless tasks on someone without backup. The job is hard—don’t just say “good luck,” actually support your team. Standing around waiting for a bonus doesn’t create a better workplace. Maybe I was just at a bad store, but after three years of no recognition, no support, and not even fair pay, it felt pointless and demeaning.
