Assistant City Attorney I - Code Prosecutor

The Fort Worth City Attorney’s Office is a collegial in-house legal team providing civil and criminal legal services to the City. They seek an Assistant City Attorney I - Code Prosecutor to prosecute municipal code violations, pursue nuisance abatement litigation, advise city departments on ordinance matters, and partner with departments such as Code Compliance and Police to protect public safety and enforce the City Code.

  • Ability to pass and maintain CJIS fingerprint-based background check

Responsibilities

  • Prosecute state and local criminal offenses in municipal courts, including case screening, preparation, hearings, trials and appeals
  • Prepare and review City Code ordinances and advise City departments on enforcement and ordinance language
  • Pursue civil remedies and nuisance abatement lawsuits under Texas statutes (e.g., Ch. 125, Ch. 54, Ch. 211) including preparing cases for bench/jury trials
  • Appear in court and administrative hearings representing the City and its departments
  • Draft legal documents, pleadings, motions, and legal opinions for assigned matters
  • Conduct legal research, written discovery, depositions, and negotiate settlements as needed
  • Monitor compliance with local, state, and federal law and provide guidance on enforcement options

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • License to practice law from the Supreme Court of Texas
  • At least two years of increasingly responsible experience in city or related governmental law, including litigation
