Data Scientist

About Rewiring America

Rewiring America is the leading electrification nonprofit, focused on electrifying our homes, businesses, and communities. We develop accessible, actionable data and tools, and build coalitions and partnerships to make going electric easier for households and communities. Rewiring America helps Americans save money, tackle nationwide emissions goals, improve health, and build the next generation of the clean energy workforce. We believe in an abundant, flourishing, climate-safe future, and know that, together, we can realize one.

Position Summary

We are growing our team and seeking a mission-driven Data Scientist to join our Data Science team. This position reports to the Lead Energy Modeling and Simulation Engineer, with technical mentorship from the Lead Data Scientist.

The Data Scientist is principally responsible for owning and contributing to modeling efforts to expand upon our data models of the costs and benefits of electrification. In addition, the Data Scientist plays a pivotal role in our efforts to use data to support Rewiring America’s policy advocacy and community implementation work, and to create data tools to share our data models with the rest of the electrification advocacy ecosystem.

Rewiring America is unique among climate-focused nonprofits in that we have a strong technical team that includes data scientists, data engineers, software engineers, and product designers. The Data Science Team supports all aspects of Rewiring America’s mission by precisely and accurately estimating the upfront and ongoing costs and benefits of electrifying any household or community in the country. We are constantly working to build upon our data models, and recent efforts have included developing a machine learning “surrogate” model trained on building energy model simulations to predict pre- and post-upgrade energy consumption, building out solar and storage modeling, and assessing the impact of user-defined utility rates on the economics of electrification. In addition, we are expanding our reach by making data tools that allow partner organizations to access our data models — powering the field in addition to our internal team. As a Data Scientist, you will contribute to similar projects.

What You’ll Do

As our Data Scientist you will:

  • Develop and maintain data-driven models (e.g., accurate utility rate modeling, upfront cost modeling), building up subject matter expertise in the relevant domain and data.
  • Write efficient, accurate, and well-documented code.
  • Communicate the capabilities and limitations of the models and insights we produce to generate a clear-eyed assessment of what more needs to be done.
  • Work with partner teams and organizations to understand their challenges and how we can solve them with data.
  • Collaborate with members of the Product Team to build data tools that internal and external stakeholders can use to make the case for electrification
  • Synthesize and distill data and communicate analytical results clearly, across a variety of formats (e.g., presentations to technical and nontechnical audiences)

Who You Are

The incoming Data Scientist will be driven by a commitment to Rewiring America’s values, vision, and mission. You embrace the idea that we can do big things, and demonstrate humility, curiosity, and a learner’s mindset. You recognize that the stakes of what we are trying to accomplish depend on a passionate, high-functioning, and reliable team.

You will join an organization that operates with a sense of urgency and a track record of success across the fields of science, technology, business, policy, and politics. As our Data Scientist, you will ideally add both hands-on coding experience and subject matter expertise that together allow you to identify opportunities to expand upon our data models for the benefit of the electrification ecosystem.

The successful candidate demonstrates enthusiasm for making electrification easy, and models excellence and integrity in all they do. The selected candidate will also possess the following Core and Preferred qualifications and characteristics:

Core qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to the mission, policies and goals of Rewiring America.
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in science, technology, engineering, or math; and/or equivalent work experience.
  • 2+ years of experience working with data, solving progressively more challenging problems.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively in a remote-only environment.
  • Advanced Python skills for data retrieval, cleaning, modeling, and analysis/visualization.
  • Experience with collaborative code (git) and methodology reviews and ability to provide thoughtful, constructive feedback to peers.
  • Content knowledge in climate, building electrification, utilities, and/or renewable energy resources.
  • Demonstrated communication ability across formats with skill in delivering information in a concise and compelling manner to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to scope work to meet near-term objectives and independently communicate status updates.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Content knowledge of or related to the utility sector.
  • Experience with distributed computing frameworks (e.g., Spark, PySpark) for large-scale data processing.
  • Excellent references demonstrating a strong track record in data science, communication, and teamwork.
