i’ve been in hiring meetings. sometimes the team loves the candidate, but finance shuts it down.
“More senior candidate” really just means “we’re stalling until budget clears or we can underpay someone desperate.”
I got a referral from a founder, crushed the panel, then got told they were freezing the role.
Literally every line here is truth. It’s like we’re being gaslit into thinking we’re not good enough when the reality is the whole system is broken.
i keep thinking if I just network harder or redo my resume again, maybe I’ll break through.
Can confirm. I’ve had three hiring managers tell me I was “great” only to ghost or send the classic “we went in a different direction” email.

my company’s had 3 layoffs since feb. ceo said more coming. roles posted for over a year aren’t getting filled. i’ve referred 5 people, all rejected. we’re offshoring 2 full departments.
i got referred by a VP and a CEO for other jobs. made it to final rounds and got rejected. reason is “more senior candidate” or “better budget fit.” even though i asked for the same rate i make now.
none of it matters anymore. your referrals, your outreach, your charm, your experience. i’ve been told i’m amazing in interviews and still passed over.
it’s not your fault. it’s corporate greed.
