Database Engineer

Responsibilities

Peraton is hiring a Database Engineer to support critical missions within its Risk Decision Group.

 

This is a 100% Remote position.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines using SQL/Python.
  • Architect and orchestrate modular, traceable data workflows and dependencies with modern frameworks (e.g., Airflow, Prefect, Dagster).
  • Assist in building and maintaining cloud-native database management systems on platforms such as AWS and Azure, including data modeling and schema design. 
  • Write and optimize SQL queries across cloud platforms (e.g., Amazon RDS, Azure SQL) under guidance to ensure query performance and system scalability.
  • Build and manage data workflows supporting operational and analytical reporting, and AI systems. 
  • Help develop cloud-based data validation methods and analysis tools that serve dynamic business needs. 
  • Develop and deploy backend API service (e.g., FastAPI) within containerized environments to expose processed data to downstream applications.
  • Optimize data systems for performance, reliability and monitoring.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and improve existing data pipelines and workflows.
  • Implement data governance, security, and quality control best practices.
  • Maintain clear documentation of systems, processes and data lineage.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

 

   Education and clearance

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a T5/SSBI federally adjudicated clearance
  • 5 years with BS/BA; 3 years with MS/MA; 0 years with PhD

   Core Programming and ETL Tools

  • Proficiency in SQL/Python, especially for ETL workflows (e.g., DBT, Pandas, PySpark) and orchestration tools (e.g. Airflow, Prefect, Dagster)
  • Experience designing modular, traceable data flows and managing workflow dependencies.

   Database and Data Architecture

  • Familiarity with relational (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra) in both on-prem and cloud contexts
  • Strong SQL skills with exposure to Microsoft Sql Server and cloud database interfaces (Amazon RDS, Azure SQL Database)
  • Understanding of data architecture principles including normalization, schema design, and performance tuning

  Process, Collaboration & Communication

  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills and ability to work in Agile environments with tools such as Team Foundation Server (TFS)
  • Experience with Visual Studio Team Services (TFS) or Git integrations within Visual Studio to manage version control and code collaboration for SQL projects
  • Strong problem solving and communication skills
  • Ability to learn and adapt quickly to evolving data and cloud technologies in a high-paced mission-driven environment

Preferred Skills

  • Container orchestration platforms (Docker Swarm, Kubernetes)
  • Background in DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines
  • Understanding of data privacy and compliance regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA)
  • Experience with data warehousing tools (Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, or similar)
  • Experience building and deploying backend data service (e.g., FastAPI) in containerized environments.

Target Salary Range

$66,000 - $106,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
