Role Overview
As the Head of Data Engineering, you will be a pivotal leader within our technology organization, reporting directly to the CTO. This is a unique, career-defining opportunity for a "player-coach" who is passionate about building both high-performing teams and world-class data platforms. You will own the entire data engineering function at Peerspace, responsible for setting the strategic vision, architecting our technical roadmap, and managing a talented team of 3-6 data engineers. You will be the company's subject matter expert on data infrastructure, balancing hands-on architectural design and mentorship with the people management required to grow and scale a critical business function. Your leadership will ensure that data is a reliable, scalable, and strategic asset that powers decision-making and product innovation across the company.
Qualifications:
You are a great fit for this role if you have:
● Experience:
8-12+ years of experience in data engineering and/or software engineering, with a proven track record of building and scaling data-intensive systems. This includes at least 2+ years of formal people management experience, leading and mentoring a data engineering team.
● Technical Leadership & Architectural Skills:
○ Authoritative expertise in designing, building, and operating modern, cloud-native data platforms (GCP/BigQuery highly preferred).
○ Mastery of data modeling, transformation, and orchestration frameworks (e.g., DBT), with an emphasis on building for scale, reliability, and maintainability.
○ Deep architectural knowledge of event streaming (e.g., Segment), data integration patterns, data governance, and security best practices.
○ Proven ability to set a multi-quarter technical roadmap, make critical buy-vs-build decisions, and select technologies that align with long-term business goals.
● People Management & Team Building:
○ A passion for managing and developing engineers, with demonstrated success in hiring, coaching, and creating career paths for your team members.
○ Experience fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance team culture.
○ Strong skills in performance management, goal setting (OKRs), and providing constructive feedback.
● Strategic & Business Acumen:
○ The ability to translate ambiguous business problems into a clear data strategy and a concrete technical execution plan.
○ Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both engineering teams and executive stakeholders.
○ Experience collaborating effectively with leaders across Product, Analytics, Marketing, and Finance to understand their needs and deliver impactful data solutions.
Responsibilities:
In this role, you will be responsible for:
● Team Leadership & Development: Lead, manage, and grow the Data Engineering team. You will be responsible for hiring, onboarding, performance management, and the professional development of each team member, fostering a culture of ownership and excellence.
● Technical Vision & Architecture: Define and own the technical vision, strategy, and architecture for Peerspace's entire data platform. You will be the lead architect and final decision-maker for our data warehouse (BigQuery), data transformation layer (DBT), and data integration tools (Segment).
● Hands-On Execution & Mentorship: Act as the senior-most technical contributor and subject matter expert for the team. You will lead by example, contributing to the design and implementation of our most complex data pipelines and models, and unblocking your team on their toughest challenges.
● Strategic Partnership & Operations: Partner directly with the CTO and other department heads to ensure the data platform roadmap aligns with company-wide objectives. You will own the operational health of our data systems, manage priorities, and communicate progress and impact to the executive team and the broader organization.
● Platform Evangelism & Governance: Champion data quality, reliability, and best practices across the company. You will establish the standards and processes that ensure our data ecosystem is a trusted, well-documented, and secure foundation for the business.
