The Accessibility Specialist / Disability Resource Representative is responsible for ensuring equitable access to college programs and services for students with disabilities. This position conducts intake meetings, reviews documentation, and determines eligibility for accommodations in compliance with ADA, Section 504, and institutional policies. The Specialist develops individualized accommodation plans, promotes student self-advocacy, and maintains accurate and confidential records.
The role includes close collaboration with faculty and staff to support early identification and intervention for students who may need accommodations. The Accessibility Specialist also provides guidance on accessible instructional practices and ensures the timely implementation of supports. Additional responsibilities include outreach to students and community stakeholders, coordination of auxiliary aids and services such as interpreters and captioning, and the collection of data to assist director in departmental planning and budget development.
This position plays a key role in promoting disability awareness and fostering an inclusive campus environment, contributing to both student success and institutional compliance. Other duties may be assigned as needed to support the goals of the Disability Resource Center.
Essential Functions:
Conduct intake meetings with students to assess their needs and determine eligibility for accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and institutional policies.
Review and interpret medical, psychological, and educational documentation to support appropriate accommodation decisions.
Develop, coordinate, and implement individualized DRC Accommodation Plans and campus resources based on documented needs and functional limitations.
Promote and foster the development of self-advocacy skills encouraging independence and confidence by empowering students to take an active role in their educational experience in requesting accommodations and communicating with faculty.
Maintain detailed, accurate, and confidential case note records of student interactions, accommodations, and correspondence using primarily electronic systems of documentation.
Collaborates with faculty and staff to identify students who may have disabilities and supports early intervention efforts.
Provides guidance on how to address student needs, ensure timely implementation of accommodations, and promote best practices in accessible instruction.
Participate in outreach efforts both on and off campus to high school students, parents, teachers, and other community members such as orientation programs, and trainings to promote disability awareness and inclusive practices across campus and transition to college.
Collects and maintains statistical data on student services to support the Director in strategic planning, resource allocation, and budget development.
Support the coordination of auxiliary aids and services, such as captioning and interpreting, as needed.
Collaborates with Student Services offices to plan, coordinate, and support orientation, graduation, and other special events.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as well as a strong understanding of disability-related practices in higher education. Familiarity with community resources available to individuals with disabilities in Northwest Ohio. Comprehensive understanding of a wide range of disabilities, including but not limited to Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism, mental health conditions, cognitive disorders, and physical and sensory impairments. Understanding of how these disabilities can impact academic performance and be able to identify and implement appropriate accommodations and modifications at the college level. General knowledge of laws and ethical practices related to the privacy and confidentiality of student records, including FERPA and disability-specific regulations.
Strong computer and keyboarding skills, along with effective interviewing abilities. Familiarity with word processing and database software is essential, as is the ability to operate standard office equipment efficiently.
Ability to produce timely, clear, concise, and grammatically accurate case notes and written reports. Strong communication skills are essential, including the ability to interact effectively and professionally with students, parents, faculty and other college stakeholders.
Ability to manage a large and complex student caseload in an organized and efficient manner. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor in high-pressure or stressful situations. Strong time-management skills and the ability to balance multiple priorities effectively. Ability to participate fully and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
Position Qualifications:
Strong working knowledge of disability laws, including Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
Understanding of assistive technologies and auxiliary aids and services (e.g., captioning, interpreting services).
Familiarity with accessible instructional practices and universal design for learning (UDL).
Ability to conduct interactive processes with students to identify and implement appropriate accommodations.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and accurate records in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA.
Proficiency in using case management systems, database software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
Ability to learn and use student information systems and accommodation management platforms (Workday).
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree
Working with students at the secondary or post-secondary level (2 years)
Experience with youth or adults with disabilities (2 years)
Experience counseling, advising, psychology, interviewing, or teaching youth or adults (2 years)
