Managing Director of Investments

Position Summary

Reporting to the Chief Investment Officer, the Managing Director of Investments takes a leadership role in the strategy development and investment of NYU’s endowment portfolio. This individual’s primary focus is designing, sourcing, and maintaining a best-in-class portfolio of alternative investments across hedge funds, credit (liquid and illiquid), and other absolute return-oriented investments. Extensive expertise in underwriting a wide range of strategies including systematic strategies, macro, relative value, and lending, among others, is critical. Key responsibilities include sourcing and carrying out rigorous diligence on existing and prospective investment managers, developing strong relationships with investment managers, and contributing to a team culture of excellence and high integrity. The Managing Director is expected to collaborate and engage across the portfolio, contributing to work on asset allocation, performance analysis, and portfolio construction. The Managing Director will be a thought leader on the team, identifying key areas of risk and new investment opportunities, and monitoring market trends and economic conditions to inform strategic decisions. A senior-level position in the Investment Office, the Managing Director serves as the subject matter expert in their assigned asset classes, collaborating with the Chief Investment Officer and colleagues to develop a high-performing portfolio. The individual will also manage, mentor, and develop a team of junior investment professionals, fostering a collaborative and high-achieving working environment. The successful candidate will have a results-oriented work ethic with a mindset of continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Required Education:Bachelor's Degree Preferred Education:Master's Degree A CFA and/or MBA is preferred. Required Experience:10+ years of investment experience. Relevant experience can include work at an endowment, corporate or public plan sponsor, family office, or asset management firm. This experience must include asset management oversight of a portfolio of managers including the selection of external investment managers. Extensive experience underwriting strategies such as statistical arbitrage, macro, fixed income relative value and alternative credit required. Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:Deep institutional investment management experience and a demonstrated and relevant track record of achievement. Significant knowledge of a wide range of hedge funds and lowly correlated investment strategies (e.g. systematic/statistical arbitrage, macro, multi-strategy, reinsurance) their assigned asset classes including a strong network and understanding of leading managers and their investment processes, operations, compliance protocols, and history. Advanced verbal and written communication skills including at the ability to communicate complex topics to a variety of audiences including Investment Office colleagues, Investment Committee members, University constituents, and peers. Communicates thoughts and ideas to the Investment Office team. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Must be proactive with their analyses by researching topics that may be useful for their asset class or broader portfolio. Industry Relationships. Ability to maintain relationships with senior individuals throughout the industry to keep abreast of important, sometimes intangible developments that could impact portfolio holdings. Must be able to travel to meet managers and attend conferences. Results-Oriented. Must be a high-impact player, making an immediate, positive impression in any business situation, and have the ability to develop and leverage relationships across a range of professionals. Additional critical skills include: Cultural astuteness and appreciation for the University’s mission. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to clearly articulate complex concepts, ideas, and processes with maturity and credibility. Data-oriented approach to addressing investment diligence and research. Team orientation and the ability to motivate and energize people at all levels and functions to pursue common objectives and business goals.

Additional Information

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is USD $430,000.00 to USD $470,000.00. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
