The Staff Environmental Specialist position specifically focuses on supporting day-to-day operations in the Hazardous Consolidation Program (HCP) to achieve project milestones and accomplish mission requirements at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point. The primary goal of this program is to achieve life-cycle control and management of hazardous material (HM) through the application of sound management practices that minimize the types and quantities of HM procured, stored, distributed, and used to accomplish mission requirements. This position requires utilizing sound judgment and initiative in planning, organizing, and performing the essential duties and responsibilities outlined below.

A DAY IN THE LIFE
As a Staff Environmental Specialist, you will be part of a strong team of committed professionals. This role will be responsible for a full range of activities including:
Helping to administer the Hazardous Material Management System (HMMS) application to meet site-specific requirements.
Providing technical support of the HM tracking software as needed.
Supporting HCP expansion and tenant implementation.
Managing authorized use lists (AUL) update requests and HMMS label requests.
Validating safety data sheets (SDS) for new tenants and organizations.
Developing HCP tenant binders.
Conducting periodic inventories of HM at designated storage locations as needed.
Preparing HMMS reports as needed.
Supporting the free-issue HM program, aimed at promoting the beneficial reuse of HM as a diversion of hazardous waste streams.
Participating and serving as the subject matter expert (SME) for HMMS in continual process improvement projects related to hazardous waste management.
Participating in periodic reviews of Marine Corps Base Orders and Policies in relation to the management of HM.
Participating in the development of Environmental Management System (EMS) measurable goals and contributing to successfully meet established goals.
Supporting MCAS Cherry Point during internal and external Environmental Compliance Evaluations through data calls, process mapping, and review of regulatory requirements.
Working effectively with MSE in both independent and team settings.
Maintain confidentiality at all times.
Exercise safe work practices by following all Company safety rules and OSHA regulations, including attendance at all required safety training programs.
Participate in the company’s continuous improvement programs and provide support to team efforts.
Keep up-to-date and current on industry trends by completing formal training, reviewing professional publications, and attending professional workshops.
Perform other duties as assigned.
YOUR EXPERTISE AND SKILLS
To perform this job successfully, individuals must be able to perform each duty and responsibility satisfactorily. High School Diploma or equivalent.
2+ years of experience in area of expertise.
Licensing and Certification: Ability to obtain and maintain HAZWOPER certification.
Requirements: Full-time assignment onsite at MCAS Cherry Point - requires ability to successfully pass FBI background check.
A very detailed knowledge of computer aided software, specifically the Microsoft Suite.
Oral and written communication skills.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to present to Supervisors.
Organizational skills and attention to detail.
While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee may be required to spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers, and is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel. There may be occasional lifting (overhead, waist level) from the floor of supplies and materials weighing no more than 30 pounds. The work will involve some bending, standing or walking. Out of office site visits could potentially have more strenuous physical demands.
Work environment will vary greatly depending on nature of assigned tasks.
Possible work environments could include normal office working conditions in a well-lit, climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential.
The position may involve local travel as needed.
