About the Role

This leadership role is based at our East Lansing School of Barbering and provides oversight for Barbering programs in East Lansing (MI), Knoxville (TN), and Lincoln (NE).

The Director of Barbering ensures program consistency across campuses while staying up to date on state-specific regulations to maintain compliance in each location. Responsibilities include evaluating program effectiveness, overseeing Educator performance and preparedness, supporting Student Educator training, and influencing curriculum and student kit development. This role plays a critical part in upholding the quality and reputation of Douglas J’s Barbering education.

Job Description

What You’ll Do:

  • Teach advanced Barbering techniques—fades, beard work, straight-razor shaving—and oversee consistent delivery of technical training across all Barbering programs
  • Lead and support Educators and Student Educators to ensure high-quality, consistent instruction
  • Oversee and assist in the training and mentorship of Student Instructors as they work toward licensure, maintaining program consistency and excellence
  • Partner with the Curriculum Manager and Compliance Department to stay current on state-by-state licensing requirements and ensure all campuses remain compliant
  • Evaluate program effectiveness across locations, identify areas for growth, and help implement improvements
  • Monitor student experience, retention, and outcomes—taking proactive steps to support student success
  • Apply your professional expertise to advise on student kit selections and support curriculum refinement—ensuring alignment with Douglas J standards and state board expectations
  • Foster a structured, professional, and supportive learning environment 

Qualifications

What We’re Looking For:

  • Licensed Barber Instructor (Michigan or able to transfer license)
  • Experience managing a barbershop team &/or mentoring licensed Barber Instructors
  • Confident in leading both staff and students with clarity, structure, and high expectations
  • Skilled in training and developing new instructors
  • Strong understanding of student learning experiences and how to elevate them
  • Solid technical background with up-to-date knowledge of tools, trends, and shop standards
  • Familiar with state regulations, program compliance, and licensure requirements
  • Natural leadership presence, strong communication, and accountability mindset
