Intermediate Support Engineer (AMER)

GitLab is a public, open-core company building an AI-powered DevSecOps platform used by thousands of organizations. The AMER Intermediate Support Engineer will sit between Support and Engineering to troubleshoot complex customer issues across self-managed and SaaS environments, contribute fixes to the codebase, improve support tooling and documentation, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive product improvements.

Skills

  • Experience managing customer-facing technical cases through resolution
  • Strong Linux systems administration comparable to LFCE/RHCE
  • Scripting experience (Ruby or Bash) and familiarity with MVC frameworks like Ruby on Rails
  • Hands-on use of Git and CI/CD in production or customer environments
  • Ability to write clear support content and documentation
  • Ability to explain complex technical topics to varied audiences
  • Familiarity with DevOps technologies such as Kubernetes and Serverless
  • Comfort with on-call rotations and incident communication

Responsibilities

  • Handle technical customer cases from triage through reproduction, bug reporting, and resolution across Zendesk, email, and video calls
  • Investigate issues using Linux admin tools, logs, and the GitLab codebase; create merge requests to fix root causes
  • Support both Self-managed and GitLab.com (SaaS) customers and participate in daytime on-call rotations
  • Write and maintain clear, reusable support documentation and runbooks based on real customer scenarios
  • Collaborate with Product, Development, Infrastructure, Customer Success, and Sales to influence roadmap and prioritize fixes
  • Develop and improve internal support tooling, automation, and processes in the issue tracker
  • Pair with teammates, share knowledge, and participate in hiring activities to grow the Support team

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience preferred
  • Relevant certifications (LFCE, RHCE) considered a plus
  • Open to candidates with equivalent practical experience in technical support or engineering roles
