Backend Engineer - Agentic Search Team
Exa is building web-scale systems for search. Our Agentic Search Team is pushing this frontier forward by creating a high-compute search layer to retrieve and synthesize knowledge at scale. We’re looking for someone with deep backend expertise who’s motivated by the challenge of inventing entirely new ways for humans and machines to interact with information.

You’ve built or worked with distributed systems, search infrastructure, or large-scale data pipelines

You are energized by building on the edge of what’s possible in search, creating systems that enable true agentic reasoning over the world’s knowledge
Example Projects
Architect backend systems to support agentic, high-compute search over billions of documents
Build orchestration pipelines for autonomous agents that plan, filter, and synthesize multi-step searches
Develop query planning, caching, and distributed execution systems that deliver reasoning-heavy results in near real time
Collaborate with product and design to shape a new class of user-facing research tools powered by autonomous agents
Push performance boundaries across infrastructure to make frontier-scale reasoning feel instant and effortless
