Location & Schedule

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. In this position you can expect to report to the Denver Wastewater Building (2000 W 3rd. Ave., Denver, CO 80223) on in-office days. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days.

The Infrastructure Delivery Division – Bridge Office has an opening for an Engineering Supervisor. This position would be part of a larger 17-person team working with engineers, project managers, inspectors, skilled tradesmen, and business administrators.  As an Engineering Supervisor, you will have an opportunity to supervise design and construction management aspects of bridge preventative maintenance, rehabilitations, replacements, and emergency repair projects. 

Your role, as an Engineering Supervisor, is to lead individuals, teams, and deliver results through coordinated project management.  Specifically, you will also be able to:  

  • Assign and manage workload for up to four direct reports - provide support, guidance, document performance, and provide feedback for continual growth and development. 

  • Assist engineers in resolving technical engineering and/or project management-related issues on projects. 

  • Maintain accurate records and data on team’s projects for tracking & reporting and demonstrate a strong desire to learn, train, and transition to new systems. 

  • Work with our SME Engineer to develop and maintain a 6-year capital plan for vehicular and pedestrian bridges.   

  • Help resolve complex or sensitive community concerns on projects by bringing stakeholders together and facilitating productive conversations on multi-beneficial solutions. 

  • Participate in committees and task forces across multiple agencies and/or departments to discuss issues and ensure successful DOTI outcomes. 

  • Learn, promote, and convey DOTI values in the work performed including equity, safety, and employee appreciation. 

  • Balance time to support functions across teams and other duties as assigned with planning, design, or construction related issues. 

Other job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Directs and evaluates the work of professional engineers and associated personnel, provides technical expertise to staff, and establishes section and staff work programs and project objectives. 

  • Participates in preparing revisions and updating the department’s engineering standards, monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of program delivery methods and procedures, and recommends policy/procedure revisions.  

  • Establishes design and construction schedules, monitors progress of various projects and their conformance to schedules, specifications, and regulatory requirements.  

  • Resolves sensitive, controversial, and complex technical problems involving staff, consultants, contractors, and the public.  

  • Assists in developing and managing the budget for the unit/section and allocating funds for projects in order to accomplish yearly goals and objectives.  

  • Develops or modifies work plans, methods, and procedures and determines work priorities.  

  • Assigns and distributes work, reviews work for accuracy and completeness and returns assignments with recommendations for proper completion.  

  • Resolves problems encountered during daily operations and determines standards for problem resolution. 

  • Develops goals, documents performance, provides performance feedback and formally evaluates the work of the employee; provides reward and recognition for proper and efficient performance. Assists staff to achieve performance standards and identifies opportunities for continual improvement to performance standards.  

  • Responds to formal and informal employee grievances and prepares written response.  

  • Documents causes for disciplinary action and initiates letters of reprimand and formal recommendations for disciplinary action.  

  • Provides work instruction and assists employees with difficult and/or unusual assignments.  

  • Performs other duties as assigned.  

What You’ll Bring

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • At least three years of Senior Engineer level experience in horizontal transportation-related projects and developed skills in program/project management related to capital construction.  Your professional experience should include: 

    • Experience with large multi-disciplinary projects that include bridge replacements over creeks and rivers, channel reconstructions, retaining wall systems, roadway reconstruction, drainage, and utility coordination 

    • Experience with roadway engineering, recreation path design, bridge/walls, grading, drainage, tabulations / quantity calculations, and specifications. 

    • Experience with CDOT plan and specification formats 

  • Demonstrated leadership skills in motivating, mentoring, and supervising diverse professionals while providing guidance with professional development. 

  • Strong technical and analytical skills to develop and use data to drive decisions and deliver results. 

  • Organization, communication, and customer service skills that build community, stakeholder, and team trust. 

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Architecture.

  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of senior engineering or architecture experience.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.

  • Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements.

  • License/Certifications:

    • Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.

    • Requires registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers at the time of application. Or requires registration as an Architect by the Colorado State Board of Registration at the time of application.

    • Registration in another state will be accepted in lieu of this requirement, provided that the applicant has Colorado registration at completion of probation.

    • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
