Senior Manager of Policy

Compassion in World Farming, International was founded in 1967 in England by Peter Roberts, a British farmer who became horrified by the development of intensive factory farming. Building upon the organization's storied legacy in the UK, EU and through working with global companies, Compassion in World Farming USA was launched in 2014 to bring much-needed change to the epicenter of modern industrial agriculture. We are a team of strategic bridge builders working to reverse the interconnected and devastating consequences of factory farming, harnessing our technical expertise and the power of partnership to bring together an inclusive coalition of advocates, consumers, farmers, companies, and institutions. From corporate boardrooms to the halls of government to news feeds, we work tirelessly on the ground to establish an innovative and resilient food system that is compassionate, fair, and regenerative for our planet and all its inhabitants.

Compassion in World Farming, Inc. (CIWF U.S.) was established in 2014 to confront the harmful impacts of factory farming in the nation where it is most entrenched. As the U.S. Office of a global organization, we combine deep technical expertise with strategic corporate partnerships to drive lasting change across the food system. Our work spans corporate engagement, public policy, and consumer awareness—bridging these arenas to accelerate the transition toward higher-welfare farming practices, regenerative agriculture, and a more sustainable food future. We collaborate with food companies, policymakers, farmers, and advocates to set ambitious standards, close harmful policy gaps, and inspire industry-wide transformation. Rooted in compassion and guided by science, we are working to replace industrial animal agriculture with systems that are humane, equitable, and resilient—for animals, people, and the planet. Position Overview. We are seeking a highly versatile, self-motivated, and proactive professional to lead and advance work across corporate engagement, public policy, advocacy, and communications. This role requires a strategic thinker who can operate across multiple disciplines, manage shifting priorities, and step into leadership and coverage roles when needed. The ideal candidate thrives in both independent and collaborative settings, demonstrates exceptional initiative, and brings a solutions-focused mindset to complex challenges

Key Responsibilities Corporate Policy (45%)

  • Support and advise on active food business relationships to drive meaningful animal welfare progress.
  • Identify and leverage intersections between corporate and policy workstreams to maximize strategic alignment (e.g., regenerative agriculture, breed transitions, animal welfare metrics).
  • Assist with corporate resource development, including case studies, technical guidance, and advocacy tools.
  • Manage select corporate accounts when needed, ensuring consistent relationship-building, strategic alignment, and progress toward commitments.

Public Policy & Advocacy (45%)

  • Lead or support U.S. public policy campaigns at the agency, local, state, and federal levels to reform industrial agriculture, end factory farming practices, and promote regenerative, welfare-centered agriculture.
  • Build and strengthen relationships with coalitions, policymakers, and advocacy partners to advance CIWF’s policy priorities.
  • Draft and review public-facing and technical materials, including public comments, policy briefs, sign-on letters, and campaign messaging.
  • Coordinate with internal teams (communications, research, fundraising) to ensure policy alignment and integrated strategies.
  • Represent CIWF in public forums, briefings, and media engagements as needed.

Strategic Communications & Media Relations (10%)

  • Serve as a spokesperson in media engagements, briefings, and public events to advance policy and advocacy priorities.
  • Draft and refine public-facing materials, including campaign messaging, policy briefs, and media content.
  • Partner with communications and policy teams to ensure consistent, aligned messaging across platforms and campaigns.
  • Contribute to integrated communication strategies that support legislative, corporate, and advocacy goals.

Team Collaboration, Management & Coverage

  • Provide flexible support across three core areas – Public Policy, Corporate Policy, and Communications – based on organizational needs.
  • Manage or oversee staff and workstreams during coverage periods (e.g., maternity or sick leave).
  • Participate in project management, planning, and reporting to keep workflows on track.
  • Collaborate closely with the Head of Corporate and Public Policy to maintain cohesion and set priorities.

Qualifications

  • 5-7 years of experience in public policy, advocacy, corporate engagement, or animal welfare/food systems work.
  • Strong knowledge of legislative processes, public policy, advocacy campaigning, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to write and communicate clearly for both technical and general audiences.
  • Experience working with cross-sectoral partners, including NGOs, companies, and government agencies.
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage complex projects and provide team-level support.
  • Familiarity with regenerative agriculture, corporate social responsibility, and animal welfare science.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative remote environment.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally within the U.S. and internationally (up to 15%).
  • Preference to East Coast candidates.
