Company Description

At Coffman Engineers, we serve as both prime consultant and sub consultant on projects large and small, including commercial, retail, institutional, government, industrial, and project/construction management. Incorporated in 1979, we have employees in more than 23 locations serving clients across the United States and overseas.

To meet client objectives and to integrate our many disciplines, we can create teams comprised of civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and corrosion control, as well as project/construction managers and professionals in a variety of specialty services. This ability has made us a leader in the engineering and construction communities, and has strengthened our reputation as being progressive, innovative, and a great place to work.

Job Description

We are seeking an entrepreneurial, dynamic, innovative, and quality-oriented Structural Discipline Manager with at least 12-years of experience to manage the structural department within our multi-disciplined engineering office. You should be able to win work and then manage the projects, using current staff that you can add to, as the backlog grows. You must have excellent written and verbal communication skills along with a high-level ability to manage multiple clients and multiple projects at one time. This could be the right opportunity for a seasoned structural engineer who has developed a network of clients.

We are looking for a leader who works effectively with all personality types, is interested in developing close relationships with our great clients, and who desires to grow professionally and stay involved in the activities and exciting trends in the industry. The position will involve a mix of technical design and consulting, construction support, and new project scoping and proposal writing. We work in tight-knit teams that support each other and are managed with a healthy work-life balance that is focused on development and caring for the whole person.

The position is hybrid where the staff are in-person three days a week (minimum) and have the option to work remotely two days a week. The optional remote workdays of the week are currently Monday and Friday. These guidelines are reassessed periodically.

In this Role You Will:

  • Lead daily coordination with internal teams and external clients to ensure project milestones and quality standards are met.
  • Mentor engineers and oversee technical development across the structural team.
  • Support business development efforts by identifying opportunities, cultivating client relationships, and contributing to proposal writing and project pursuit strategies.
  • Manage internal and external projects using strong project management skills.
  • Conduct peer reviews to ensure technical accuracy and consistency.
  • Represent the firm in local and national professional organizations such as SEAONC and NCSEA.
  • Lead structural design efforts for high-profile commercial, institutional, or mixed-use projects.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards, including CBC, ASCE, and ACI.

Qualifications

Required

  • B.S. in Civil or Structural Engineering; M.S. in Structural Engineering preferred.
  • California Professional Engineer (PE) and Structural Engineer (SE) licenses.
  • 12+ years of experience in structural design of buildings or similar structures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Revit, ETABS, RISA, and other analysis tools.
  • Strong knowledge of the International Building Code (IBC) and U.S. structural design standards.
  • Proven experience managing client relationships and leading project teams.
  • Excellent leadership, supervisory, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Comfortable consulting with clients and coordinating across disciplines.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multi-discipline design team.

Preferred

  • Experience with DSA and HCAI projects.
  • Familiarity with seismic design and performance-based engineering.
  • Prior leadership in multi-disciplinary project teams.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Approximate Base Salary – $130k-180k based on experience
  • Paid overtime at 1.0 times hourly rate
  • Competitive end of year discretionary bonus based on company/team/personal performance
