Staff Software Engineer - Front End

Our Opportunity:

Chewy is seeking a Staff Software Engineer – Front-End to join our fast-paced, customer-first Sponsored Ads team. This role is instrumental in launching innovative, customer-facing products designed to delight and engage Chewy’s advertising partners, while scaling our advertising technology and strengthening brand partnerships. As a senior member of the team, you’ll help design, build, and deliver intuitive, performant, and scalable front-end experiences that power ad creation, campaign management, creative tools, and performance reporting across Chewy’s digital ecosystem.

Sponsored Ads at Chewy creates a win-win ecosystem—offering pet parents relevant product options and deals while enabling brand partners to maximize visibility and reach through targeted placements. Advertising is a fast-growing, strategically important component of Chewy’s e-commerce platform and a key driver of incremental revenue.

In this role, you’ll leverage your deep expertise in front-end engineering to lead the development of engaging web experiences for both advertisers and internal users. As an early member of the team, you’ll be part of shaping the technical strategy, owning core areas of the system architecture, and influencing the user experience across Chewy’s retail platform and advertiser portal. You will also help lead the team through ambiguous technical decisions and play a critical role in establishing front-end engineering best practices.

This is a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of a greenfield initiative, delivering technology-driven business impact in a high-growth area of the company.

What You'll Do:

  • Serve as a senior technical contributor on the Sponsored Ads engineering team, focused on front-end architecture and implementation.
  • Own and lead design, development, testing, and deployment of high-quality front-end applications and features.
  • Work closely with Product, UX, and Back-End Engineering to build seamless, performant, and accessible user experiences.
  • Champion engineering excellence by writing clean, modular, and maintainable code with a strong emphasis on testing and performance.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and pair programming sessions.
  • Decompose complex problems into manageable components that can be executed incrementally and at scale.
  • Help establish and enforce best practices for front-end development, including performance optimization, accessibility, and responsive design.
  • Participate in sprint planning, technical design sessions, and retrospectives to improve development processes and team velocity.
  • Contribute to team culture by fostering collaboration, innovation, and accountability.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or related field—or equivalent industry experience.
  • 10+ years of experience developing front-end applications using modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React, Vue, Angular).
  • Demonstrated expertise in building large-scale, high-quality, customer-facing web applications.
  • Strong fundamentals in computer science, including data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design.
  • Hands-on experience with TypeScript, front-end state management (e.g., Redux, Zustand), and component-based architectures.
  • Proficiency with HTML5, CSS3, responsive design, and front-end performance tuning.
  • Experience with GraphQL, RESTful APIs, and client-side data handling.
  • Proficient in front-end testing tools and frameworks (e.g., Jest, Cypress).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to articulate complex ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to lead through ambiguity, set technical direction, and influence architecture decisions.
  • Position may require occasional travel.

Bonus:

  • Experience in e-commerce or advertising technology domains.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies such as Scrum or XP.
  • Experience with AWS cloud services and infrastructure automation (e.g., Terraform, Ansible).
  • Strong data analysis capabilities in large-scale environments.
  • Familiarity with Test-Driven Development (TDD) and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Exposure to server-side rendering (SSR) or static site generation (SSG) concepts.
  • Passion for pets and Chewy’s mission is a plus!
