Summary
The Tutor is a funded position through The Children’s Trust grant. The Tutor is an integral part of the CARE Center, and provides academic support for youth enrolled in the CHAMPS (Community of Healthy Active Motivated Positive Students) afterschool program that takes place within middle and high school community sites. The tutor assists students in grades 6-12 (at assigned school site) with homework, projects, test preparation, research, and other academic tasks. The tutor works with youth to help them understand key concepts, especially those learned in the classroom; as well as teaches the necessary skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note-taking skills. The tutor also provides instructional support on core subject areas (science, math, English, reading) with a focus on Writing, Discussion, Questioning, Organizing, or on a broader Framework component: Prepare, Engage, or Reflect.
This is a grant-funded, temporary, part-time, In-person position.
Essential Functions
Deliver academic support activities at middle and/or high School Sites for youth program participants:
Carries out tasks and assignments related to training i.e., instructional support on a focus area such as Writing, Discussion, Questioning, Organizing, or on a broader Framework component: Prepare, Engage, or Reflect.
Reviews curricula topics and assignments
Assists students with homework, projects, test preparation, papers, research, and other academic tasks
Works with students to help them understand key concepts, especially those learned in the classroom
Teaches skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note-taking skills, and approaches to answering test questions
Demonstrates academic best practices for specific subjects and assignments, including research and writing tactics
Develops and distributes teaching materials to supplement classroom lessons, including study guides
Conducts practice tests to track progress, identify areas of improvement and help set goals for exam preparation
Provides students positive and constructive feedback
Offers feedback on progress to students’ parents and teachers where appropriate
Builds meaningful connections with students from diverse backgrounds
Recognizes different learning styles and student preferences
Designs differentiated learning goals
Stays up to date with the school curriculum
Participates in all University, C.H.A.M.P.S. program and funder trainings
Maintains consistent communication with program site coordinator and director/s.
Administer and collect program data:
Participates in data collection for academic support activities of CHAMPS program participant
Participates in gathering attendance of youth enrolled in academic support program activities.
Qualifications/Requirements
High school diploma or GED required
Associate's degree preferred
3 - 5 years of relevant experience providing academic support activities for middle and high school students required
Must be able to manage administrative and programmatic aspects
Must have professional interactions with program directors, program participants, program staff, and the community
