Staff Thermal Engineer, Space
Skills
- Strong heat transfer fundamentals (conduction, convection, radiation)
- Proficiency with Thermal Desktop or equivalent thermal simulation tools
- Hands-on thermal test and prototyping experience including instrumentation and data correlation
- CAD experience (Siemens NX preferred) and familiarity with drawing/assembly practices
- Experience scripting or coding for thermal analysis (Python, MATLAB)
- Ability to communicate technical tradeoffs and present status to stakeholders
Responsibilities
- Own thermal design, analysis, and testing for a space hardware development program
- Define thermal architecture and quantify hot, cold, and edge-case environments driving system design
- Perform first-principles hand calculations and develop MATLAB/Python/spreadsheet models before detailed simulation
- Execute detailed thermal simulations (Thermal Desktop or equivalent) and correlate models with test data
- Plan, instrument, and execute thermal tests; post-process data and support root-cause analysis
- Manage thermal component vendors and maintain materials/properties/vendor database for space thermal hardware
- Present thermal status and tradeoffs at formal internal and customer reviews
- Develop tools to improve analysis efficiency and support failure reviews with test-backed thermal analysis
Education
- BS, MS, or higher in engineering, applied physics, or related hard science
- Relevant coursework or professional experience in heat transfer and thermal systems
