Skills
- 5+ years professional engineering experience with at least one frontend and one backend stack (example: React and Ruby).
- 3+ years recent experience with React and JavaScript/TypeScript.
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing practices.
- Practical experience with cloud infrastructure and containerization (AWS, Docker, Kubernetes or similar).
- Experience with observability and monitoring tools (e.g., Datadog) and application performance troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with accessibility standards and USWDS design patterns.
- Understanding of secure development best practices and Zero Trust principles.
- Experience integrating with APIs, ideally health-related standards (FHIR) and VA APIs.
- Willingness and ability to contribute to open-source repositories.
- Experience experimenting with or leveraging AI tools/services to improve software outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Build accessible, performant, and scalable frontend and backend features in an open-source ecosystem using Ruby on Rails and modern frontend frameworks.
- Develop user-facing features with React (TypeScript/JavaScript) following USWDS design patterns and VA API/FHIR standards where applicable.
- Write and maintain 100% automated test coverage (unit, integration, functional, load, accessibility) for all delivered features.
- Integrate with VA APIs and backend services to ensure secure and accurate data rendering and discoverability via the Lighthouse API Hub.
- Support migration and retirement of legacy systems while ensuring continuity of content and functionality.
- Contribute to full-stack healthcare features (secure messaging, medical records, medications) with a focus on interoperability and user-centered design.
- Monitor and triage application performance daily using tools like Datadog and respond to incidents per VA severity levels.
- Prevent and resolve silent failures through robust error handling, user notifications, and backend transaction validation.
- Participate in pair programming, peer reviews, blameless post-mortems, and continuous knowledge sharing.
- Continuously integrate and deploy code using VA Platform tooling, CI/CD pipelines, and reusable infrastructure components.
- Uphold Zero Trust security principles, avoid exposing sensitive data in source code, and contribute non-sensitive code to open-source repositories.
- Support the Engineering Community of Practice through mentoring, documentation, and internal initiatives.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field preferred (or equivalent practical experience).
- Equivalent practical experience accepted in lieu of degree.
