Position Summary
The Student Health and Counseling Center (SHCC) provides a variety of health and personal counseling services which enhance the quality of the student’s life while at UW-Parkside as well as promoting positive health habits. The Student Health and Counseling Center is a department within the Division of Student Affairs headed by the Dean of Students. This is a 1.0 FTE position over 12 months.
Under the direction of the Director of the Student Health, Counseling, and Accessibility Services and in collaboration with the nursing staff , other counselors and psychiatrist, the Counselor is a licensed professional counselor who manages a counseling load of students and provides leadership and organization to wellness initiatives promoting a healthy university environment focusing on topics relevant to college students (alcohol and other drugs, sexual misconduct training, You@Parkside,etc.). Serves on various university-wide committees and performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
85% A. Provides personal and group counseling in accordance with the ethical standards of the
American Counseling Association, state, and departmental policies and procedures. Evaluates mental health and behavior and treatment readiness; and develops, coordinates, and disseminates treatment plans for clients, collaborating with campus health providers when necessary. Teaches clients about disorders and helps develop strategies to cope with mental health and behavior problems. Provides crisis intervention for emergencies regarding student safety and well-being, including suicide ideation/attempts and sexual assault. Recommend referrals and schedules logistics for clients to receive medical care or various program assistance to help clients live and work more independently (i.e. intensive outpatient programs, etc.). Completes reports related to clinical treatment and patient planning, and/or referrals according to established policies and procedures. Is available for occasional after-hours crisis response. Facilitates campus community education programs and/or support groups to help individuals and campus community members understand the needs and abilities of people with mental health disabilities.
10% B. Coordinate and manage wellness and prevention programs and serve as liaison to UW System on these initiatives.
Coordinate and manage sexual misconduct training on campus. Coordinate AODA, drug-free school, and other prevention programs.
5% C. Administrative Duties and Professional Development
Participates in staff meetings and staff development activities. Serves on various campus committees. Maintain and improve clinical competence through ongoing professional development activities and education, including reading of professional journals and books. Attend and participate in local, state, regional and national professional conferences, and continuing education workshops. Maintains appropriate licensure. Performs other duties as assigned.
