The Archaeology Program invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment in archaeological materials and ancient technologies at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in July 2026. We seek an archaeological scientist with expertise in material science and its application to the analysis of archaeological objects and the reconstruction of ancient technologies, as well as the theoretical frameworks that underlie the reciprocal relationships between science, technology, and culture. The successful candidate will have fluency with a range of instrumentation types and an ability to offer courses such as archaeological science and materials analysis, sustainable technologies, object conservation, the history of technology, experimental archaeology, and courses about their region of interest. Candidates should also be able to teach a research design course for majors. The regional specialization and methodology of research focus is open. Special consideration will be given to candidates who bring demonstrated experience of innovative and creative teaching, and whose specialization includes the possibility of on-campus laboratory or local (New England) research opportunities for students. We especially welcome candidates whose research and teaching focuses on Indigenous or other marginalized knowledges and/or with experience in applied archaeology or cultural resource management.
The teaching load is two courses per semester, in person, on Wesleyan’s campus. Additional duties include advising and mentoring students, carrying on a program of research, contributing to archaeology outreach events, and participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university level. With an engaged and diverse undergraduate student body, Wesleyan is a highly selective liberal arts college that values both scholarship and teaching and offers a generous sabbatical program and competitive salaries and benefits. To apply, visit https://wesleyan.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/careers. A complete application includes a cover letter, curriculum vitae, writing sample, statement of current research, and documentation of teaching experience, including a teaching statement, course syllabi, and student evaluations (please combine documents; the system only accepts up to 5 documents). In the cover letter, applicants should describe how they will embrace the college's commitment to fostering an inclusive community. You will be asked to provide the email addresses of three referees from whom we will obtain confidential letters of recommendation.
Applications completed by November 24 will receive full consideration. The minimum requirement for this position is a PhD in Archaeology or a related field at the time of application. Please contact Katherine Brunson (kbrunson@wesleyan.edu; 860-685-2068) if you have questions about the application process.
