Research Project Engineer II

The Coastal Response Research Center (CRRC) and the Center for Spills and Environmental Hazards (CSE) (a NOAA Grant funded Center) seeks individual to conduct and oversee research and evaluation of oil spill response, restoration, and disaster response. The responsibilities include planning field research projects at the mesocosm and full-scale level, assisting in the execution of the projects, analyzing the data, and writing interim and final reports on the projects. This position provides the technological support to research projects involving the design, construction and maintenance of experiments and related support equipment. Other responsibilities include: a) facilitate and report on 4-6 workshops per year on cutting-edge problems faced by the oil spill community, and b) facilitate and coordinate post-workshop working groups of experts on problems identified at the workshops. Work will include coordinating with on-campus personnel and outside scientists and engineers. Attendance will be required at 1-2 national conferences per year. Supervision of undergraduate students will be required. Attention to detail and excellent note-taking skills are required.

Job Duties:

  • Conduct extensive research in cooperation with NOAA colleagues who request experiments regarding hazardous/oil spill response and restoration (detection, transport, toxicity, response, assessment, etc.)

Supervision:

  • Management of research projects of major importance, development of experimental design and procedures, and implementation of new research efforts at the Center and in the community.

  • Supervise graduate and undergraduate research assistants in experimental safety, process and outcomes.

  • Act as liaison for ongoing work with contractors, technicians and students in the construction of the experimental needs and to keep project on task.

Field Work and Maintenance:

  • Design components of an experiment with detailed specifications.

  • Assist in the construction, maintenance, and repair of oil research experiments and systems.

  • Installation, maintenance, and repair of monitoring equipment.

  • Handling, storage, delivery of oil samples.

  • Collect, record, and manage experimental data and samples.

  • Track, analyze, and report project progress and status to the director and stakeholders.

  • Assist in the construction, maintenance and repair of field and lab experiments

Data Management and Outreach:

  • Oversee the writing of manuals, protocols, experimental design, sections of grant proposals and research and provide cost estimates for projects and experiments.

  • Prepare culminating/outcome reports and detailed experimental guidelines on projects and related operations tasked by the Center from our federal colleagues.

  • Conduct thorough literature reviews as appropriate and coordinate database as appropriate.

  • Classify data and research results to various applicable variables and knowledge of research.

  • Prepare peer-reviewed manuscripts of research data and outcomes.

  • Attend various meetings, workshops and symposia to present results of research

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree in environmental science or engineering; or marine-related major.

  • Computer skills.

  • Working knowledge of marine environmental pollution.

  • Experience designing the components of an experiment with detailed specifications.

  • Supervise and schedule technicians in the construction of the experimental needs; liaison with subcontractors and other staff as needed to keep project on task.

  • Assist in writing manuals, protocols, experimental design, sections of grant proposals and research and provide cost estimates for projects and experiments.

  • Prepare culminating/outcome reports and detailed experimental guidelines on projects and related operations tasked by the Center from our federal colleagues.

  • Supervise graduate and undergraduate students and staff in experimental safety, process and outcomes.

Compensation Pay Range:

$30/hour

Please be advised that this position is supported by external sponsor funding. As such, continued employment in this role is contingent upon the availability of those external funds. Compensation Pay Range:

$54,990.00 - $98,150.00
