Role Description

This is a unique opportunity for a seasoned and entrepreneurial tax professional to build our in-house tax function from the ground up. We are seeking a hands-on Head of Tax at GFiber, reporting to the GFiber Corporate Controller to take ownership of the full suite of tax responsibilities currently managed by Alphabet. You will be responsible for designing and implementing all tax compliance and strategy. This role is perfect for a “builder” who is eager to create scalable processes, manage key external advisor relationships, and serve as the Company's subject matter expert on all things tax.  Depending on skills and interest, opportunities may also be available for expanding the scope of responsibilities to include certain other functions such as Treasury.

In this role, you'll:

  • Build the Function: Establish the company's standalone tax function, developing all necessary processes, controls, and documentation.
  • Federal, State & Local Tax: Manage all Federal, State and local tax matters, including income/franchise tax, sales & use tax, property tax, and navigating the complexities of Pass-Through Entity (PTE) tax elections.
  • Partnership Compliance: Oversee all aspects of tax compliance, with a primary focus on federal (Form 1065) and state partnership returns, including the calculation and distribution of K-1s.
  • Strategic Advisory: Advise leadership on tax implications related to a partnership/corporate structures, new business initiatives, and potential transactions. Model tax scenarios to support strategic planning.
  • Vendor Management: Select and manage relationships with third-party tax consultants and preparers, ensuring timely delivery and high-quality work.
  • Tax Accounting: Own the tax accounting process, including managing partner tax capital accounts, quarterly and annual tax provisions, and ensuring proper reporting.
  • Audit Defense: Serve as the primary point of contact and manage all tax audits and inquiries from federal, state, and local tax authorities.

At a minimum we'd like you to have:

  • 12 years of progressive tax experience, at least 5 in a leadership role, with a strong preference for a mix of public accounting and in-house corporate tax roles.
  • Experience in partnership taxation (Subchapter K), this includes complex allocations, managing capital accounts, and K-1 reporting.
  • Experience in State and Local Tax (SALT), with hands-on expertise managing indirect taxes such as sales & use, property, and gross receipts taxes.
  • CPA certification and a Master's degree in Taxation or Juris Doctor (JD) with a focus on tax law.

It's preferred if you have:

  • Experience at a Big 4 Accounting Firm
  • Proven ability to manage external advisors and consultants effectively to achieve compliance and strategic goals.
  • Understanding of multi-state tax issues for service-based businesses, including nexus and apportionment.
  • Experience creating tax processes, implementing systems, and building a tax function from an early stage is highly desirable.
  • Experience in the construction, infrastructure, telecommunications, or internet service industry.
  • Operational treasury experience, specifically cash management & forecasting as well as managing domestic banking operations.

 

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $187,200 - $257,800 + bonus + cash award + benefits. As pay varies by location, your recruiter will share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
