US News Editor

Role purpose and overview

The US News Editor will lead the US bureau in Washington DC, delivering original journalism for a global audience. 

They will be one of the key commissioners in the organisation and spearhead a significant part of The Telegraph’s growth strategy.

The role requires knowledge of digital publishing, and a strong understanding of the news agenda and the media climate in the US and UK.

Key responsibilities

  • Run a team of reporters, commissioners and publishers in Washington DC
  • Help to shape the strategy for audience growth in the US and across the world
  • Set the daily US news agenda every day and define priorities
  • Plan and execute medium and long term projects
  • Liaise with general and specialist reporters to generate original ideas
  • Manage rotas to schedule coverage of live and diary events
  • Commission reports from across the US and neighbouring countries
  • Build a US and international audience while also serving the traditional UK reader base
  • Work with Comment and other departments to curate holistic coverage of events and themes
  • Generate promotion and post-publication plans for US content

Key skills

  • Experience in an international news room
  • Experience commissioning and publishing major world news stories
  • Ability to develop news stories and break exclusives
  • Track record of developing own ideas
  • Familiarity with digital and visual journalism
  • Ability to edit copy to a high standard to tight deadlines
  • Experience with and writing and refining headlines and sells 
  • Strong understanding of off-platform promotion
  • Line manager experience is essential
  • Ability to develop contacts outside the US bureau to help grow audience
