Senior Product Manager, AI, NYT Wirecutter

Wirecutter, the product recommendation service from The New York Times, is seeking a Senior Product Manager, AI to lead strategy, rapid experimentation, and prototyping of LLM and generative-AI initiatives. The role focuses on delivering reader-facing value and operational efficiency through hands-on prototypes, close partnership with engineering and data science, and measurable experimentation while upholding journalistic independence and ethics.

Skills

  • 5+ years product management experience with demonstrated ownership of complex products.
  • 2+ years applying AI/ML in product contexts or managing AI/ML product development.
  • Proven ability to build rapid prototypes, scripts, or lightweight proofs-of-concept.
  • Experience collaborating with engineers and data scientists on technical architecture and trade-offs.
  • Comfort with experimentation, metrics-driven decision making, and product analytics.

Responsibilities

  • Define and execute AI product strategy that balances short-term impact with long-term innovation across reader-facing and internal tools.
  • Prioritize AI initiatives by building business cases and metrics that measure editorial quality, reader engagement, and commercial outcomes.
  • Rapidly prototype and validate AI-driven concepts (low- to high-fidelity), transitioning validated ideas to product teams for production.
  • Partner with engineers and data scientists on architecture, technical dependencies, and implementation plans.
  • Identify and implement AI tooling to automate high-friction internal workflows, supporting adoption and integration.
  • Evangelize AI adoption across product and engineering teams, run demos, share wins, and upskill peers on AI-assisted workflows.
  • Champion ethical AI practices, ensuring accuracy, objectivity, and preservation of journalistic trust.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience.
  • Advanced degree in a technical or business discipline is a plus but not required.
