Position Summary: The Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) supports student success by evaluating, identifying, and treating speech and language disorders that impact educational performance. Working as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, the SLP conducts comprehensive evaluations, contributes to the MET and IEP process, develops individualized goals, and delivers services aligned to students’ needs. The SLP is responsible for supervising Speech-Language Pathology Assistants (SLPAs) in accordance with state and federal requirements. The SLP may be involved in staff training, Medicaid billing, and school-wide initiatives, as appropriate. This position requires strong collaboration with educators, families, and related service providers to promote carryover and generalization of communication skills across school environments. All duties must be performed in accordance with district, state, and federal guidelines.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

  • Provides direct, consultative, and/or collaborative speech-language services, as identified through the IEP/504 plan, to students enrolled in StrongMind’s managed educational programs.
  • Conducts comprehensive evaluations and re-evaluations aligned with Arizona eligibility criteria to evaluate students’ levels of speech/language functioning (e.g., articulation, phonology, voice, receptive language, expressive language, pragmatic language skills, etc.)
  • Evaluates and writes state and federally compliant assessment reports identifying student needs and proposed treatment strategies
  • Develops and implements state and federally compliant IEPs with measurable goals aligned to student needs and present levels
  • Maintains progress records; participates in IEP meetings.
  • Participates as a MET/IEP team member and contributes to eligibility and programming decisions
  • Monitors therapy programs and consults with educational staff regarding inclusion of appropriate speech/language therapy treatment strategies into the educational program; evaluates the efficacy of the established program and makes modifications within the framework of the IEP process as necessary.
  • Supervises Speech-Language Pathology Assistants (SLPAs) per state regulations, federal regulations, and ethical standards
  • Maintains accurate documentation of services, progress, and communication in required systems
  • Collaborates and coordinates speech/language therapy goals with the educational program.
  • Demonstrates educational and developmental strategies to students and families for successful home intervention of speech/language programs.
  • Consults and collaborates with medical and community agencies that interact with students’ speech/language therapy services.
  • Submit Medicaid billing documentation as required by the district
  • Makes recommendations of augmentative and alternative communication equipment, as needed.
  • Maintains an in-depth knowledge of the laws and policies governing Special Education in Arizona, particularly as they pertain to the delivery of speech/language therapy services and related documentation.
  • Consults with other members of the educational team regarding the mandated and best practice roles of speech/language
  • Administers speech/language therapy programs as needed in terms of budget recommendations, space, and equipment
  • Collaborates with staff and families to support generalization of skills across school settings.
  • Attend meetings, trainings, and contribute to school-wide or department-wide efforts as assigned.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Specific Job Skills/Abilities:

  • Vast understanding of speech and language development of children and young adults.
  • Application of speech/language therapy techniques utilized in the assessment and treatment of children with disabilities.
  • Skilled in the educational and developmental needs of children and young adults.
  • Principles of consultation, training, and supervision.
  • Accurately assess the developmental status and educational needs of children and young adults. Strong understanding of IDEA, Arizona eligibility categories, and school-based service models
  • Skilled in conducting evaluations using a variety of standardized and informal tools
  • Ability to write legally compliant IEPs with individualized, functional goals
  • Ability to write legally compliant METs with educational recommendations
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with students, families, and staff
  • Strong documentation, organization, and time management abilities
  • Competence in supervising and supporting SLPAs to ensure fidelity of service delivery
  • Ability to adapt therapy and supports across a range of student ages, needs, and educational environments
  • Proficiency with digital tools and IEP platforms (e.g., PowerSchool, IEP-Pro, etc.)
  • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively in fast-paced educational settings
  • Commitment to ethical practice, equity, and ongoing professional growth

Education/Training:

  • Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program
  • Arizona Department of Health Services license – Speech-Language Pathologist required
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP)
  • AZ IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Eligibility to supervise SLPAs required
  • (Note: Clinical Fellows and Speech-Language Technicians are not eligible due to supervision requirements)
  • Two (2) years school therapy experience preferred.
  • Experience supervising SLPAs preferred.
