Senior Scientific Editor – Job Summary
Are you passionate about advancing scientific discovery through the power of clear, compelling communication? The Senior Scientific Editor plays a pivotal role in shaping high-impact research at St. Jude by providing expert editorial support for clinical and basic science materials destined for top-tier journals and funding agencies.
This role requires a deep understanding of the unique requirements of various scientific documents—including manuscripts, grant applications, and reports—and the ability to deliver tailored editorial guidance. The editor also advises investigators and researchers across the institution on writing strategy, structure, and submission planning to maximize impact and clarity.
In addition to mentoring new editorial staff (as requested by the Director of Scientific Editing), the Senior Scientific Editor contributes to institutional publications and supports the development of materials for seminars and other scientific communications.
Scientific Editor – Job Summary

The Scientific Editor supports the creation of a wide range of documents that help inform the scientific community about the groundbreaking research done at St. Jude—from manuscripts and grant applications to institutional reports and seminar materials.
This role ensures clarity, accuracy, and consistency across all scientific communications. The editor demonstrates strong editorial skills and a solid understanding of life sciences, scientific publishing standards, reviewing documents with precision and minimal guidance. Focus areas include grammar, nomenclature, spelling, word usage, and formatting.
Senior Scientific Editor:
- Minimum Education and/or Training:
- Master's in life sciences, or a related field required.
- PhD preferred.
- Minimum Experience:
- Minimum Requirement: 4+ years of experience as a scientific editor or relevant research and publication experience; PhD preferred.
- Experience in construction and review of scientific documents (journal articles or grant applications) preferred.
- Experience in experimental design; statistical principles; effective display of scientific data; and publication policies, procedures, and ethics preferred.
- Experience in the construction and review of NIH grant applications preferred.
- Experience working with scientific/ cross-functional stakeholders (e.g., authors, scientists, biostatisticians, illustrators, and designers) preferred.
- Proven performance in earlier role/ comparable role.
- Certification Required
- ELS (Editor in the Life Sciences) certification by the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences required.
Scientific Editor:

- PhD preferred.
- Minimum Experience:

- Experience in the construction of scientific documents (journal articles or grant applications) preferred.

Compensation
In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $78,000 - $139,360 per year for the role of Senior Scientific Editor / Scientific Editor.
