Mechanical Design Engineer (Launch Site Ground Support Equipment)

SpaceX is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer for the Falcon Integration team at Vandenberg to rapidly design, build, test, and activate ground support equipment (GSE) supporting vehicle processing, payload integration, and umbilical refurbishment. The role requires hands-on hardware experience, strong CAD/FEA capability, and the ability to work closely with technicians and customers to deliver reliable systems under fast-paced launch cadence demands.

Skills

  • Proficiency in CAD (experience with NX/Teamcenter preferred)
  • Experience with FEA and structural analysis tools (NASTRAN, ANSYS, ABAQUS, etc.)
  • Hands-on fabrication, assembly, and testing experience
  • Analytical programming experience (Python, MATLAB, Excel scripting)
  • Knowledge of complex fluid systems: pressure vessels, valves, regulators, filters
  • Familiarity with relevant standards (ASME codes, AFSPCMAN, NASA standards)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, changing environments and perform field operations

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and activate structural, tooling/fixture, fluid, and transport equipment for launch site vehicle processing and launch
  • Develop CAD models and run finite element analyses to validate designs meet internal and customer requirements
  • Lead design reviews and coordinate activation and acceptance testing
  • Serve as technical interface to customers, suppliers, and cross-functional engineering teams
  • Support flight inspection and refurbishment operations for pad umbilicals and ground interfaces
  • Hands-on field work during ground system build, test, and activation alongside technician teams
  • Collaborate on mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic system operations for non-flight hardware
  • Provide continuing engineering and production support to maintain >99% uptime for GSE
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards and codes for fluids and mechanical systems
  • Document designs, test results, and lessons learned; communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline (required)
