Overview
The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Cardiology Pre- and Post-Operative Unit is responsible for delivering safe, compassionate, and high-quality nursing care to patients undergoing cardiac diagnostic and interventional procedures. The RN provides pre-operative assessments, patient/family education, intra-procedural support, and post-operative recovery care. This role requires strong clinical judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to respond quickly to changes in patient condition.
Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive pre-operative assessments, including patient history, medication reconciliation, allergies, and risk factors.
- Provide patient and family education regarding upcoming procedures, post-operative care instructions, and lifestyle considerations.
- Prepare patients for cardiac catheterizations, electrophysiology studies, pacemaker/ICD placements, and other interventional cardiology procedures.
- Initiate and maintain IV access, administer medications, and monitor patient vital signs.
- Provide post-procedure monitoring in the recovery area, ensuring safe stabilization and discharge readiness.
- Manage pain, nausea, and potential post-operative complications in accordance with established protocols.
- Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary care teams to ensure optimal outcomes.
- Document all nursing assessments, interventions, and patient responses in the electronic medical record (EMR) accurately and timely.
- Maintain compliance with hospital policies, nursing standards of care, and regulatory requirements.
- Support a patient-centered environment that fosters safety, dignity, and trust.
Qualifications
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING
1. Bachelor Degree in Nursing (BSN); preferred.
2. Active state Registered Nursing (RN) License; required.
3. Current BCLS (AHA), ACLS certificate upon hire and maintain current; required.
4. One (1) year clinical experience in a Cardiovascular Lab doing cardiac work or in a Critical Care area; required.
