Senior R&D Engineer I - Qualification & Reliability

Rocket Lab is an end-to-end space company building rockets, spacecraft, payloads, and components to enable ambitious space missions. The Senior R&D Engineer - Qualification & Reliability will lead qualification, reliability, and environmental testing efforts for multi-junction solar cells and related technologies in an R&D environment, working cross-functionally to design tests, analyze data, and drive problem resolution for new materials and products.

Skills

  • Experience characterizing diodes/semiconductors and interpreting IV curves and device metrics.
  • Hands-on experience with environmental and reliability testing (thermal cycling, shock, vibration, radiation exposure, humidity, ESD).
  • Proficiency with electrical test setups, instrumentation, and test automation.
  • Data analysis and statistical tools (Excel, JMP) and technical reporting (PowerPoint, written reports).
  • Strong cross-functional communication and ability to present technical results clearly.

Responsibilities

  • Design, plan, and execute qualification, confidence, and reliability test campaigns for multi-junction solar cells and related devices.
  • Develop and operate electrical circuitry and test hardware to enable environmental and performance characterization.
  • Characterize devices using tools such as QE, IV (pulsed/continuous), dark IV, EL, TLM, reflectance/absorptance, capacitance, and mechanical testing.
  • Analyze test data using Excel, JMP and other tools; prepare and present reports and formal presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Investigate device failure mechanisms and perform root-cause analysis across electrical, mechanical, and environmental domains.
  • Collaborate with R&D, manufacturing engineers, and external vendors to develop required test tools, fixtures, and procedures.
  • Develop technical documentation, test methods, and test plans; ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and specifications.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (required).
  • Master's or PhD in physics, electrical engineering, materials science, or related field (preferred).
