Spacecraft Communications Payload Lead Engineer

Relativity Space is building next-generation launch vehicles and advancing planetary science through its Interplanetary Program. The team is seeking a Hands-on Lead Engineer for the Communications Payload to own architecture, design, test, and delivery of a high-capability communications and compute system for an upcoming science and exploration mission, driving cross-disciplinary tradeoffs and flight-ready hardware development.

Skills

  • System architecture and detailed electrical design for complex multi-disciplinary systems
  • RF communications fundamentals, link budgeting, and antenna/interface considerations
  • High-capacity compute and storage system knowledge for constrained environments
  • Power, thermal, structural, and EMI/EMC tradeoffs and constraints management
  • Hands-on hardware integration, prototyping, and test execution
  • Systems engineering, requirements flowdown, and interface management
  • Risk management and mitigation for flight hardware
  • Strong technical communication and cross-functional leadership

Responsibilities

  • Define and own end-to-end architecture for the communications and compute payload
  • Lead design, integration, and verification activities across RF, compute, power, thermal, and structural domains
  • Technically lead a small team of subject matter experts and responsible engineers
  • Plan and execute hands-on development campaigns, prototypes, and risk-reduction testing
  • Manage interfaces with internal teams and external vendors/partners; drive interface control and requirements closure
  • Perform trade studies, link budgets, and requirement allocations to meet mission needs
  • Develop test plans, oversee integration and verification, and support final system-level acceptance
  • Identify and mitigate technical risk; document decisions and maintain traceability

Education

  • Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or related technical field
  • Extensive practical experience (see qualifications) in delivering complex electrical/avionics systems

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Generous PTO and sick leave
  • Parental leave
  • Annual learning and development stipend
  • Comprehensive benefits package (health, dental, vision) — see company perks link
  • Reasonable accommodation support and inclusive hiring practices
