Optical Communications System Responsible Engineer

Relativity Space is building Terran R and pioneering new approaches to rapid, iterated space systems. The Interplanetary Program seeks to enable affordable, repeatable planetary science by developing next-generation deep-space capabilities. The Optical Communications System Responsible Engineer will own end-to-end architecture, design, and delivery of a deep-space optical communications terminal, driving prototypes, technology demonstrations, and flight-ready integration across internal teams and external partners.

Skills

  • Deep knowledge of optical communications subsystems including PAT, modems, and photonic components
  • Proven systems engineering capability to translate mission needs into requirements and architecture
  • Hands-on electromechanical prototyping experience integrating optics, electronics, and mechanical subassemblies
  • Experience taking complex systems from concept through qualification, integration, and operational deployment
  • Ability to synthesize technical trade-offs and communicate decisions across engineering and program teams

Responsibilities

  • Define system-level requirements and architecture for a deep-space optical communications terminal based on mission needs
  • Drive implementation via in-house design and coordination with external partners to deliver prototypes and flight hardware
  • Plan and execute hands-on prototyping, test campaigns, and early technology demonstrations to de-risk critical subsystems
  • Integrate optics, electronics, and mechanical subsystems (gimbals, pointing mechanisms, precision mounts) into coherent system designs
  • Develop and validate pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT) approaches and assess modem/photonic hardware performance
  • Lead cross-functional reviews, trade studies, and hardware-to-software interface definition through qualification and delivery
  • Document system designs, test plans, verification activities, and acceptance criteria; present results to program leadership

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Optical, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering or related technical field (required)
  • Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline preferred

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Generous PTO and sick leave
  • Parental leave
  • Annual learning and development stipend
  • Comprehensive benefits package
