Is it okay to just want to be an individual contributor forever?
I’m about 5 years into my career and honestly, I love where I’m at. I work remotely for a software company with a great culture, supportive team, and a manager who actually respects boundaries. No micromanaging, flexible schedule. it’s the perfect dream.
Thing is… I don’t really want to climb the ladder. I just want to do my work, do it well, log off, and live my life. I get good performance reviews, I’m seen as a high-performer, and I do get yearly raises. But I have zero desire to manage people or take on extra responsibility just for the title.
Sometimes I feel guilty about it like I’m supposed to want more. But what if I already have what works for me?
Anyone else feel the same? Is it weird to just want to stay an IC long-term and protect your peace?
