I feel like there's a perception right now that working in tech means you're one of the coolest kids in the block. I can't deny that film like the Social Network or the K-drama show, start-up, influenced the way how we view professionals working in tech. As someone who's in the MarTech (Marketing & Technology), it's not always a glamorous work. It's long journey of hard work and trial and errors. Tech challenges the old and it innovates to create something new so you have to be open to possibilities as your role will be many. As your team figure out what's new, it also demand new skills. Above all, if you have an idea, make it happen. As they say, 'Planning is next to procrastination'.
You have to know what you need to let go of and what needs your attention. This in and of itself is a life long learning ability to refine. You will always be working on that and redefining your entire life. It is not only for your job but also in your life. You will learn through trial and error. Your own unique abilities and talents will permeate to create your understanding. Life is a journey, not a destination. This is a saying used throughout mental health groups as it helps keep us focused on what's really important.
Let go of perfection! "Fail fast" is a common phrase in tech for good reason. Find metrics to guide you. And know about your product. Learn not just the features and functionalities but the value it brings to customers. On the flipside, know it's limitations and competitors too.
A newbie should know that no matter how much experience you have, or how long you work in a field, there's always more to learn. Technology and trends are always evolving and it's important to keep up with what's new in any industry you're in. Let go of thinking you know it all and doing things the way it's always been done. Embrace what's new and how you can do your job better than yesterday.
No matter how well you think you know whaat you're doing, there's always more to learn. Be open to asking questions, messing things up, and learning new methods!
