The City of Birmingham is seeking a well-qualified and motivated individual for the position of Municipal Court Probation Officer II. This role is responsible for conducting evaluations, recommending referrals, and implementing and overseeing court-ordered probation activities for adult offenders. The Probation Officer manages a caseload by maintaining contact with probationers to ensure compliance with court orders, preparing reports and documentation, attending court hearings, and developing relationships with community resources. The position also requires participation in professional development activities.COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
Driver's license.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
No felony convictions or misdemeanors of moral turpitude including but not limited to domestic violence or theft.
Experience providing case management (e.g., probation, parole, medical, social work).
Ability to obtain a Court Referral Officer (CRO) certification within one year of employment (Note: there is no financial cost to the employee for obtaining this certification).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by the City of Birmingham. These qualifications may be considered by the hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.
Experience interpreting information from English to Spanish and Spanish to English.
Experience working in a courtroom setting as a court officer (e.g., probation officer, probation aide, social worker).
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
Performs administrative tasks such as documentation, maintaining information files, and processing paperwork to ensure files are accurate.
Develops personalized case management plans by recommending treatment referrals, community-based referrals, and new probation orders to help probationers succeed.
Prepares case recommendations for the judge by attending court sessions/hearings, preparing reports, and providing compliance updates on probationers to help the judge make informed decisions about the probationer's case.
Completes intake procedures by reviewing probationers’ background information, interviewing probationers, and assessing risk and needs to gather information about the probationer.
Serves as a liaison for the department by developing relationships, attending meetings, communicating with courts, and educating the community to coordinate services and resources.
Monitors probationers through gathering information relevant to cases and communicating with associated departments/agencies to help ensure compliance with court orders.
Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job is primarily sedentary, involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods.WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is conducted both indoors in office settings as well as courtroom settings. Work involves the use of standard office equipment, such as a computer, phone, copier, etc. Employees may be exposed to bodily fluids such as urine.EEO STATEMENT:
