The Small Animal Internal Medicine Service oversees referrals for dogs and cats. Small Animal Internal Medicine (SAIM) technicians contribute to patient care, client communication, and provide support for a variety of general and specialized procedures. Technicians provide instruction to veterinary students, interns, and residents in technical procedures, hospital policy, as well as organize and manage daily clinical tasks to enhance service efficiency. The technician works closely with faculty, interns, residents, and veterinary students in supporting the service to uphold the teaching missions of the veterinary hospital.
Job Responsibilities:
Veterinary Technician 1
25% - Assist with sample collection for many diagnostic tests with the proper protocol. Includes, but not limited to clinical pathology and LADDL tests, endocrine tests (Cushing’s, Addison’s, thyroid testing etc.), specialized coagulopathy (hemophilia panels, anemia panels, etc.), infectious disease panels, blood cultures, and a variety of urine testing.
20% - Assist with the set-up, maintenance, and troubleshooting of endoscopy equipment. This is to include assisting clinicians and house officers with guidance on the procedure (gastroscopy, colonoscopy, cystoscopy, bronchoscopy, cystoscopy, etc), sampling of tissues/specimen, preparing/handling of submission for testing.
20% -Assist with the preparation and submission of requests for diagnostic procedures, monitoring of sedated patients and recovery of sedated or anesthetized patients. This is to include, but not limited to, ultrasound, radiographs, bone marrow procedures, joint taps, etc. Assist with the set-up and placement of various types of feeding tubes, calculate nutritional requirements with a working knowledge of diet selection.
15% -Assist with other related duties as they pertain to the operation of the small animal hospital (ECG, blood pressure, blood typing/crossmatching, blood transfusions and catheter placements. More specific procedures for SAIM, such as Interventional radiology procedures and I-131 radioactive iodine program for felines, in support of the Small Animal Internal Medicine Service
10% - Assist with the assessment of daily appointments for SAIM. Communicate and maintain a record of information relayed to clients and referring DVMs, including scheduling appointments. Initiate and follow through with the prescription refill requests of ongoing or long-term patients. Maintain daily charges each day before patients check out. Assist with service orientation every 2 weeks for 3rd/4th vet students.
5% - Participate in the small animal blood bank and takes on call as scheduled. Responsible for holiday coverage as assigned in the small ICU/ER, as well as the emergency response team.
5% - Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree OR Associate’s degree in veterinary technology; OR CVT or equivalent; OR 3 years of experience in a working environment with similar duties.

Additional Requirements:
-Essential personnel. May be required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, on-call, and emergency response.
