Senior Optical Test and Metrology Engineer

Typical Base Pay Range: $115,000 to $150,000 (DOE)

What You’ll Be Doing as a Senior Optical Test and Metrology Engineer:

The successful candidate will help establish and supervise the optical test and metrology lab facility for commercial sports optics like riflescopes, red dot sights, binoculars etc. Work individually as well as collaboratively with engineers and technical staff across various disciplines to conceptualize and develop test and measurement systems for both prototype and production builds. Be responsible for technical training of personnel as well as procurement and maintenance of commercial test equipment.

  • Supervise the test and metrology lab facility for commercial sports optics, including planning, coordinating, and controlling the work procedures and resource.
  • Collaborate with engineers on the design and implementation of optical test and metrology methods for both prototype and production testing of optical, optoelectronic, and optomechanical systems of moderate complexity.
  • Works cross functionally to develop calibration techniques and standards for non-standard test equipment. 
  • Identify state-of-the-art commercial metrology equipment and interface with external vendors for procurement and maintenance of such equipment.
  • Develops and maintains the roadmap for optics labs testing and advancements in testing and test protocols for new and existing products. 
  • Provides budgetary guidance for lab maintenance, test equipment, and capital expenditures.
  • Act as the primary point-of-contact to resolve issues related to lab equipment or measurement stations, including maintenance, calibrations, metrology, and validation.
  • Communicate and work cross-functionally with a diverse team of engineers and technicians across various fields
  • Manage technical lab personnel and provide technical guidance and training to other team members on the use of lab equipment and measurement stations as needed.
  • Analyze test data, interpret test results, and ensure timely and accurate generation of process documentation.
  • Maintain laboratory records including test reports, work requests and documentation in compliance with the Document Control and Quality Assurance functions.
  • Maintain safe and clean environment in the laboratory.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Skills and Experience You’ll Need as a Senior Optical Test and Metrology Engineer:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of Physics, Lasers, Optical Engineering, Optical Sciences, Electrical Engineering, or a similar field with 5+ years of related work experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated expertise in optical test and metrology methods.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of commercial optical test equipment.
  • Experience in a supervisory role for an engineering lab or production facility and/or a high-performing team of technical professionals/technicians.
  • Experience with volume manufacturing desired. Experience with spherical and aspheric lens production is a plus.
  • Experience with developing, specifying, and testing specialized lens coatings is a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience in software development to control motion systems, to develop GUIs, and to integrate open-source software packages.
  • Capable of working in a fast-paced cross-functional environment, meeting demanding timelines.
  • Ability to write and follow detailed instructions and effectively present information to technical and non-technical professionals.
  • Knowledge of hunting and shooting sports is a plus but not required.

 

Work Environment for a Senior Optical Test and Metrology Engineer:

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to sit at a computer terminal for sustained periods of time. The employee is regularly required to sit and use hands with precision. Good eye/hand coordination. The employee may be required to perform duties necessitating air and ground travel and multiple days away from home. The employee is subject to frequent interruptions and multiple deadlines while performing the duties of this job.
