About Us
At iota Biosciences, we're pioneering an entirely new form of medicine. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Astellas Pharma US, we're creating bioelectronic medical implants that treat chronic diseases in ways pharmaceuticals never could. Our wireless technology powers and communicates with implanted devices, giving clinicians a new way to treat illness.
This is your chance to be a part of groundbreaking engineering work that directly shapes the future of patient care. At iota, ideas get built, tested, and put into the hands of clinicians who are changing lives for the better.
What You'll Do
We are seeking a motivated Materials and Nanofabrication Engineer (Intern) to join our Research and Development team for a 3-month internship. The ideal candidate has a strong sense of ownership, curiosity, and creative problem-solving skills. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge devices and gain extensive hands-on experience with state-of-the-art micro- and nanofabrication tools, processes, and methods.
You will:
Fabricate iota’s R&D devices in both in-house and external nanofabrication laboratories.
Operate cleanroom equipment for photolithography (direct-write and mask-based), electron beam lithography (EBL), thin film deposition (PVD, CVD/PECVD), etching (dry and wet), and metrology (SEM, FIB-SEM, optical microscopy).
Conduct material research and optimization to improve device performance.
Develop and refine nanofabrication processes for miniaturized bio-implants.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (electrical, mechanical, and biomedical) and maintain clear communication with the R&D team.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience working in cleanrooms, with knowledge of cleanroom protocols, process integration, and operation of nanofabrication equipment.
Strong skills in data analysis, technical documentation, and effective communication.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in the UC Berkeley Nanofabrication Laboratory.
Familiarity with advanced lithography techniques (e-beam lithography, direct-write, mask-based, maskless), PVD/CVD deposition processes, dry/wet etching, and nanostructure characterization methods.
Hands-on experience with wire bonding and/or flip-chip bonding.
Experience working with silicon carbide, carbon, and titanium alloys.
Knowledge of COMSOL or similar multiphysics simulation software.
Programming skills in Python and/or MATLAB.
Why Join Us
At iota, you’ll be part of a small, agile team tackling some of the hardest problems in medicine. You’ll get direct access to world-class equipment, mentorship from experienced engineers, and the chance to see your work make an impact on next-generation medical devices.
