The base salary range for this position is dependent upon experience and location, ranging from:
$153,000 - $191,000
Job Summary:
The Director of Gas Engineering is accountable for the strategic planning, oversight, and execution of capital infrastructure investments in gas systems for NYSEG and RG&E exceeding $200 million annually and engineering functions that support construction, operations, and regulatory compliance.
This role leads the Gas Engineering functions including: Construction Engineering, Standards Engineering, and System Planning. This position manages over 70 engineering employees, both management and bargaining unit. Construction Engineering ensures the design and implementation of infrastructure projects that align with: corporate strategy, regulatory requirements, and evolving environmental policies, while supporting safety, innovation, and operational excellence across the gas systems. Standards Engineering is responsible for: distribution and transmission integrity management plans and associated projects, research and development, materials, construction standards, and operations and maintenance procedures. System Planning is responsible for: maintenance and application of hydraulic models, gate and regulator station equipment assessment and recommendations including project development, development of projects and strategic business plans, connection of renewable natural gas, and recommendations to address system vulnerabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and manage annual, 5-year, and 10-year strategic business plans for NYSEG and RG&E Gas including: regulatory proceedings, rate cases, and audits.
Execute NY Gas Engineering OpEx budget, ensuring financial accountability and performance against investment goals.
Direct engineering efforts, ensuring consistency in standards, tools, and processes across NYSEG and RG&E and other Avangrid companies where applicable.
Lead development and standardization of engineering policies and practices related to gas system design, gas construction standards and operations and maintenance processes, R&D, integrity management programs.
Ensure policies and procedures are developed in accordance with all municipal, state, and federal regulations.
Champion continuous improvement, innovation, and the use of technology to improve efficiency and safety in all operations.
Oversee capital projects from planning through execution to ensure delivery of safe, reliable, and cost-effective service to customers.
Maintain readiness and effective response to normal, abnormal, and emergency operating conditions for the gas systems.
Monitor and report on KPIs, especially capital spend and rate base additions, to ensure performance objectives and regulatory standards are met.
Deliver leak prone pipe replacement program results consistent with State mandated requirements.
Manage and assign work to bargaining unit employees consistent with union contract.
Required Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (required).
PMP Certification (preferred).
Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in utility or infrastructure engineering.
Demonstrated success in leading large, diverse engineering teams and managing complex, cross-functional projects.
Deep knowledge of utility operations, customer service impact, and compliance policies at the federal and state levels.
Experience in business case development and benefits realization.
